It's pretty casual, but if you do plan on coming, it would be nice to get a general headcount via the FB page. Thanks.

Neighborhood Chat / Oral histories of Jackson Heights residents?
« on: October 13, 2016, 02:48:09 PM »
Hi everyone, I know this is kind of random, but does anyone know of any oral histories that have been conducted of Jackson Heights residents. I am particularly interested in older residents and immigrants. Any books or other resources? I've looked online but haven't found anything. This is for an art project I'm developing.
Thanks in advance,
Linda

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Police Trap Last Night on 82nd
« on: May 13, 2009, 03:38:52 PM »
hi everyone, thanks for your replies. Interesting, but not too comforting to know that this sting operation has happened before.

no, he didn't produce a badge. I was too shaken up to ask him for one. I'm not sure if I should call the local precinct. If it is a legitimate operation, you would think they would have a better way of dealing with the good samaritans that get entrapped than threatening to arrest them.

Neighborhood Chat / Police Trap Last Night on 82nd
« on: May 13, 2009, 11:26:27 AM »
hello fellow JHers,

Last night I was walking home from the subway around 8 pm on 82nd street, and came across a suspicious site. Next to Burger King there was an abandoned stroller with a purse sitting on top of it. Visible was a cellphone, and some 20's tucked into the pocket of the purse. I looked and asked around for a minute to see if it belonged to someone nearby and nobody appeared. Thinking the purse may have been stolen and dumped (though it still had cash) or just lost, I picked it up and started looking for ID, so that I could contact the owner.

A minute later a plain-clothes policeman approaches me and basically threatens to arrest me. I tell him emphatically that I was searching for ID (as I'm sure he was watching me, it's clear that I haven't pocketed anything form the purse).  I hand him the purse and startled and upset, I go on my way.

Does anyone know anything about this disturbing police tactic???? My guess is that it is a way of trapping illegal immigrants???

thanks!

Community Trade and Classifieds / anywhere to donate used stuff in JH?
« on: November 07, 2007, 09:22:45 PM »
Hello,

Does anyone happen to know where I could donate some used books and clothing in the neighborhood?

(The Salvation Army down the street from me on 35th Ave. has a big sign that reads "No more clothes!")

thanks!
