Neighborhood Chat / Burglary Attempt
« on: August 30, 2020, 09:31:08 PM »
Last night at 11:45 PM I was sitting in front of my computer. Directly behind me on the opposite side of the room is a window to the fire escape. The window does have a fire safety gate on it, but I had it open and a small fan in the window. I heard a crash and thought the fan fell over. When I turned around the fan was lying down, the screen that was down was now up and I saw a a pair of man's arms on the fan. He was about to move it out of the way and come in!

I did scare him with a LOUD set of expletives. Now the guy was apologizing and trying to hand me a story about not being able to get into his apartment. I did see him and he was no one that I know. And he certainly knew this isn't his apartment. The guy ran up above and disappeared.

I don't know, if he's desperate from Covid economics or if he has an expensive daily habit to support. Both of which are maybe an incentive for burglary. I should also say that the window is quite visible to the outside and in a fairly well lit up place. This may be an isolated incidence or the beginning of a neighborhood rash. Please be vigilant as well as careful!

Neighborhood Chat / Does anyone know about this lady?
« on: June 27, 2020, 05:28:24 PM »
Several months back I found this portrait in the trash on 75th Street between 37th and 35th Avenues.
I'd like to know if anyone has any information about her.

Neighborhood Chat / 7 PM Cheers
« on: April 30, 2020, 08:29:20 PM »
is your section of the neighborhood as noisy as mine? I think it's a wonderful tribute to the emergency and essential works! Cars and bus drivers also participate. It's also great to see your neighbors at the windows and know they are ok. I really hope the spirit of thanks and unity long outlives Covid-19.

Neighborhood Chat / 34th Avenue mall is a mess!
« on: July 23, 2015, 08:21:44 PM »
I was going up 34th Avenue yesterday and found the divider mall a real eye sore. The weeds were not only healthy, but 3 and 4 foot high in places! One block actually had six or so black hefty bags just left there. God only knows what was in them!

For the most part there are only 2 buildings per block, one on each side of the Avenue. You'd think 2 buildings could organize a maintaince schedule. Afterall, it is their view!

Neighborhood Chat / Foodtown's self checkout
« on: June 23, 2014, 10:05:34 PM »
With all the controversy across the street, Foodtown picked up alot of extra shoppers. They expanded their hours and something also needed to be done about the long check out lines. So several weeks ago they installed self checkout lanes.

Does it really help? Is it a way of saving on payroll with new increased hours?

I had heard several complaints about them not working properly. I kind of figured some people weren't use to using such things. I had used them in other stores. Then I tried Foodtown's and sure enough the thing jammed up in the middle of my checkout.

The attendant didn't know what to do about my partial change given and called the manager. He didn't seem to know what to do either even though the machine was giving instructions. He borrowed cash change from another live cashier to give to me. I guess they figured it out later.

What do you think of these machines?

Neighborhood Chat / The Jaguar "F" Train
« on: January 28, 2014, 11:33:35 PM »
Have any riders of the F line noticed the Jaguar train?

They have not only taken every available ad space in each car of the entire train, but also fully covered the entire exterior of the whole train in advertisements.

Honestly it reminds me of the days when subway car graffiti was out of control.

Is this a pilot program for future high rollers in advertising? Or maybe this is how the MTA plans to keep the fare down? Honestly it looks awful, not to mention the in your face screaming of it all.

Neighborhood Chat / Numbers is gone
« on: August 01, 2013, 12:00:47 AM »
Looks like Numbers, the records store, between 77 and 78 is gone. There was a for sale sign in the window for the last month or so. It seems 8/1 was the cut off date. As I walked by this afternoon the place was dark and the owner was taking things out. Honestly. I don't know how he survived this long. Now what will we get?

Neighborhood Chat / Live In Caretaker Needed for Elderly Woman
« on: January 07, 2013, 02:57:33 PM »
Can anyone reccomend a good and reliable person to be a live in caretaker for a 91 year old woman?

I am placing this to assist a friend of mine. They are located in Flushing in a nice home.
They will need someone for a full 7 day schedule, or perhaps 2 ladies for a 5 day and 2 day schedule.

I'd appreciate any help or suggestions.

Neighborhood Chat / New Sidewalk Benches
« on: December 18, 2012, 03:37:31 PM »
I just noticed a new aluminum sidewalk bench installed on the corner of 37th Avenue and 76th Street. Are there others or plans to have more throughout the neighborhood?

Neighborhood Chat / TRADE FAIR
« on: April 28, 2012, 07:53:13 PM »
That hideous shack that they had added onto the 75th Street side of the store IS GONE!!!!
It seems that it came down this morning. And I'm sure it wasn't because THEY decided it was  an eyesore, and generally blocking the sidewalk.

Does anyone know the real story and who we have to thank?

Neighborhood Chat / Commercial Signs
« on: March 02, 2012, 02:27:18 AM »
75th Street between 37th Avenue & 37th Road now has 2 bright scrolling marquee signs. Before this catches on as a trend can something be done to stop this?

Neighborhood Chat / tolerance and intolerance
« on: November 08, 2011, 04:47:48 PM »
I find it very disturbing that in the past week we have 3 threads going here on this subject.
First it was the swastikas, then the Indian community, and now holiday decorations. Is there something in the air over JH lately?

I don't believe the swastikas were necessarily anti Semitic.
I do believe the initial comments about the Indian community were prejudiced.
I don't think anyone is out to disrespect Native Americans.

I have already stated on the swastikas thread that reason and level heads are needed.
Emotional responses leading to mob mentalities are just as bad if not worse than the initial acts.

It is already acknowledged here on this site that we live not only in the most cosmopolitan of cities, but also in the most ethnically diverse of zip codes. Our own JH is a unique gem for many more reasons besides being a historical district. Before celebrating our cultural diversities we should firstly be celebrating our unity.

I think a few people here might want to consider taking a xanex and then let's sit down and share what we all cook at home. It's all good stuff!
