Neighborhood Chat / Re: Parade ending??
« on: August 13, 2016, 02:46:15 PM »
was northern really closed for two miles? the parade route itself went from 69th to 86th, which is less than one mile.
Dude. Honestly. I'm starting a separate blog called "I love airplane noise and constant street closures, but only those of the one mile variety" and you can go to town on that thing.

Does anyone know when this parade will be over and the streets will be opened?? It's such a nightmare to get around to do anything. Or simply drive to or from anywhere around here.
Ugh!

Yes! Thank you. I forgot to submit my compliant for that day. Doing so now, and for today. Squeaky wheels...

Indeed - thanks for reminding me that I wanted to submit a complaint for Saturday the 19th, which I just did. I'm really trying to make a complaint, whether by internet or by phone -  EVERY time the airplane noise is disturbing (which, for me, is generally when it starts early or goes late). I feel that the volume of complaints could actually matter to Port Authority and have some kind of helpful impact.

As a reminder, you can file a complaint online at:

http://www.planenoise.com/panynj/daPRAbr9/

or call it in at the Port Authority airport noise complaint hotline:
1-800-225-1071

It takes a minute or two.

5:59am. Back to the complaint board.  I thought the outcome of the townhall was that this was stopping by the end of November?

I emailed every representative on that list - I also added Daniel Dromm.
Thank you all of keeping these links posted! :)

I'm with abcdefg... Legal action to stop using these new routes. It's fine with me if you've been living here for 85 hundred years and it's always been like that and you dont wanna do anything about it. I don't like it, it's annoying to me, it has gotten worse in the past few years and I'd be willing join a lawsuit.

Honestly, this is outrageous. I've submitted a dozen complaints between today and yesterday. But if there was something more proactive to do, like contacting council members or anything, I would do it absolutely!

Real Estate & Home Improvement / Re: Can anyone recommend a handyman?
« on: June 02, 2015, 03:56:50 PM »
i used Ralbar electricians - not a handyman, as I wanted someone licensed to work with the electric [although maybe handymen can be licensed?].  Either way, the guy who came was very nice, and installed three the day that he came.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Foodtown's self checkout
« on: July 15, 2014, 03:58:18 PM »
Oh my goodness, count me in the minority here. I cant believe it took *this* long to realize you need self checkout in this store. I had just about written off this store because of the RIDICULOUS staff slowness and inefficiency, the resulting long lines, failure to have a dedicated line for people getting their groceries delivered, getting caught behind countless people that can never seem to figure out how to get their cash out of their wallets in under 10 minutes (like its an eternal mystery that you need to pay after all of your groceries are scanned), etc etc. The last straw was when a checkout woman was so rude to me I vowed never to return (completely ignored me, threw my receipt at me, even though I said "Hi How are you" "Have a nice day")..like i wasn't even there.  Because of the great new self check area, I now go regularly after work, am able to pick up a few items, scan, bag and GET OUT OF THERE in a normal amount of time -- and without being insulted by a cashier.
*and they do have staff to help people through the self check in case scanning problems arise.

Hi - I am looking for an apartment or share in the JH neighborhood, preferable in the historic district.  I am a fully employed, neat, respectful female looking for a roommate with the same qualities.  I am flexible for a short term or long term agreement, with monthly rent in the range of $650-900/month.
Please email me directly at kricart246@gmail.com if you have an apartment and are looking for a roommate.  Thanks!

Restaurants & Food / Re: Bagels?
« on: May 12, 2014, 01:45:34 PM »
i actually really like both Slims (on 86th and 37th Ave) and Jujus bagels.  The guys at Slims are super friendly as well, and I'm always happy to see them smiling when we go there. I do like bigger fatter bagels, which Slims has usually, but Juju's multgrain are just so tasty. I might be against the crowd saying I think Brooklyn Bagels are just grossly and unnecessarily huge.  I am very happy with the JH bagel scene, and yes, i am a new yorker, so a self-proclaimed bagel expert :)

Restaurants & Food / Re: Easter Meal
« on: April 29, 2014, 01:03:27 PM »
You might try Muncan for a ham. They're a European (Romanian, I think) butcher specializing in all types of cured and smoked meats. I've never purchased a whole ham from them, but I've tried many of their bacons, prosciutti, and salami and all are delish. And they just posted on Facebook about having nice bone-in hams available. They have 2 locations - Astoria (close to the 46 stop on the R) and Ridgewood, I think. Call ahead, they are probably jammed on account of the holiday.

Just to follow up on this great suggestion...I DID get my ham!  And the guys that work at Muncan are just about the nicest ever.  They took the time to explain how to cook the ham, even though there was a line out the door of customers. I called ahead also, which was a necessity on the day before Easter. I went to the Astoria location, which was a two minute ride on the R. Thanks!!

bumping this old post...Any recommendations on where to buy an Easter ham (not limited to local neighborhood only..).  Are grocery stores good for this? I dont really eat meat, so am not versed on where is good to buy a good ham.
Thanks!
in the spirit of the original post, share your Easter dinner menus :)  We'll be having asparagus tarts, scalloped potatoes, easter bread, and ham (if I can find it :) )

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Another Parade tomorrow
« on: October 19, 2013, 02:09:10 PM »
Maybe they'll tow, or excuse me, 'relocate' my car again, after having parked it legally, then coming out to find it gone.
Is there possibly any other neighborhood in all of queens that is able to host parades besides jackson heights?  Sheesh.  Between the airplanes and the parade street closures, its almost impossible to have out of town guests come visit without some sort of weird hassle.
