From Newsday: http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/newyork/ny-bc-ny--fiveshot0524may24,0,6783817.story

NEW YORK - Police say five people have been shot on a busy Queens street.

A hospital spokeswoman says one of the victims is in critical condition. Two others are in stable condition and another two suffered graze wounds.

The five were gunned down on Roosevelt Avenue in the Jackson Heights neighborhood at around noon. Police couldn't immediately provide further details.

The manager of a neighborhood beauty salon says he ran out on the street after hearing the shots and saw the five victims lying on the bloodied pavement. Hugo Calle (CAH'-yeh), the manager, says four men and a woman were shot.

Monserrate , Peralta and Community Members Call For More Police Resources

Community Responds to Broad Daylight Shooting on Roosevelt Ave.

Queens-   Tomorrow, Councilman Hiram Monserrate joined by Assembly
member Jose Peralta and community members will call for more police
resources to combat crime epidemic and gang activity.

Date:       Sunday, May 25, 2008
Time:         1PM
Place:         Roosevelt Avenue and 80th Street, Queens

Statement from City Council Member Hiram Monserrate:

Today's incident on Roosevelt Avenue and 80th Street in Jackson
Heights, where five individuals were shot, is a stark reminder of how
important police resources are to our community.  With the NYPD at its
lowest manpower levels since the 1990's we must ensure that the budget
of the NYPD not be decreased by short term budget decisions that can
have long term negative consequences.  The Administration theme, "Do
More with Less" is not consistent with the public safety needs of our
City.

Last year, I communicated with the Police Commissioners Office about
the need for surveillance cameras on Roosevelt Avenue.  Today's
incident makes that request so much more compelling.  I again call
open the NYPD to install cameras along Roosevelt Avenue and increase
manpower levels at both the 110th and 115th Precincts.

Councilman Hiram Monserrate is a former member of the NYPD and member
of the City Council's Public Safety Committee.

It's the second shooting in as many weeks. The other was of an 18 year old women who was shot in the face.

I mean, I do love the street cred of being able to say I come from the ghetto, I would prefer the quaint cafes and small gentrified boutiques any day.

Regardless, I'm still somewhat shocked.

That's very Big Brother-esq and that makes me almost as uncomfortable as the violence.

Agreed. something has to be done.

I've lived here for three years now.  When I first moved I thought the neighborhood was kind-of up and coming, but it must have peaked because it's gotten really ghetto here since I came.  Bunch of new strip clubs on Roosevelt, a lot more vagrants and gang-types in the area.  Roosevelt is always sketchy at night, but I wouldn't think I'd have to worry at noon on a Saturday.

If there were cameras on Roosevelt it might have helped the police find the person who did this, now the shooter is out on the streets laughing and thinking how easy it was to shoot five people in broad daylight in Jackson Heights.  I'm sure the 45 year old man with the bullet in his back in critical condition at Elmhurst would prefer a safer JH.

Perhaps CCTVs would have helped catched the shooter (...I doubt it it though), but I don't think it would have helped much with the overall problems ailing Roosevelt Ave.  In my opinion, for JH city officials to recommend that NYPD and the city install cameras on Roosevelt Ave is like recommending a Band-Aid for a bullet wound.  It simply sounds like the city officials that represent JH is passing the buck to the NYPD!  I don't like budget cuts to the police department any more than the next person, but the situation on Roosevelt didn't get to this point yesterday...its been a long time coming, no?

Who licensed the shady bars and strip joints on Roosevelt Ave?!?  If we (collectively) allow such establishments to exist during good times, why should we be surprised that things may get ugly during economic downturns?

If these establishments didn't exist on Roosevelt Ave, perhaps we would have less problems.  The shooting is probably just the tip of the iceberg that is the most visible to us...if the drug, prostitution, fake ID, etc problems are tackled first, there would probably be a decrease in more violent crimes too.  Even tackling lifestyle issues such as excessive honking, double parking, ear-shattering music from passing cars may help!  Maybe I'm being silly, but if a person is constantly getting ticketed for his excessive honking, double parking and ear-shattering music as he is passing through JH to get to Roosevelt Ave, he might not go through JH as often!

I could not have said it better myself.  How do city officials  (ie. Monserrate, Sears, and community board 3) allow for the proliferation of bar after bar after bar on Roosevelt Avenue and Northern Blvd  as well, without giving consideration to all of the deleterious effects it has on our community. The shear numbers of such places makes us a target for disaster.  I've heard many of these same politicians who are seeking the use of cameras exclaim that such businesses invigorate the community,  as they attempt to  seek approval to gain liesinsure to open their doors.  Do these same officials call this "economic development?!"  Is this who we elect to represent our community??.  I love Jackson Heights and find it pretty safe as far as living in NYC goes.  "That"  is the state of the art.  I'd love to see more police and better enforcement in are community. But---no cameras -thank you.  Maybe what we really need and deserve is responsible represention!
