O.K.  So how does everyone remember the names and preps for all the Starbuck's concoctions?  I can honestly say that I've entered a Starbuck's approximately 3 times in my lifetime so far, and on each of those occasions, I've been baffled by the offerings and have ended up just buying a regular coffee.  They should publish an instruction manual to go with their coffee selection.   ???

Having just moved to JH from Seattle-The-Coffee-Mecca, Chuck, I can assure you the levels of Starbucks coffee specifics are absolutely bottomless.

CaffeineHeads in Seattle, without breaking a smile or causing a single raised eyebrow, order "a triple-venti no-foam macchiato with hazelnut and nutmeg".  Or "a tall, extra-hot half-caf americano with steamed 2% and vanilla".

When a decaf latte with nonfat milk is ordered, the call to the barrista is "one Why Bother!".

I really wish we could get the Juan Valdez folks to open a Cafe in our neighborhood.  Would make so much sense, given the demographics. And, IMO, their coffee is better than Starbucks.

I actually wrote them a few years back, but never received a response.

Well, many people who have lived here for years -- including me -- have been urging Starbucks to come here for a long time, and we couldn't be more thrilled that they are finally coming!

Bring it on. It's shaping up nicely. Seems like the counter is going to be in the back, seating near the window.

Starbucks Location
« Reply #35 on: January 11, 2008, 09:24:58 AM »
I don't know if anyone confirmed the Starbucks location on this site...from what I have read, it's been a debate.

So, in case you don't know, the Starbucks will be on 37th, between 77th and 78th, across from the Post Office and next to Novo.  I was walking down 37th Ave, last night and peeked in the window of the empty storefront to look at the construction.  On the floor, by the door was some heating and cooling apparatus hanging out of a box.  On the box was a label addressed to STARBUCKS at that address.

So there you have it!

They stil have a lot to finish...but given the machine that Starbucks is, I predict they'll be open in time to serve some sort of Valentine's inspired "beverage".

The location is in the Queensboro Corporation Building, on 37th Avenue between 78th and 79th streets. And here's hoping they're open by Valentine's Day!

It looks as though it might open fairly soon (early February). I saw them working on it Saturday evening, which means someone is putting in some OT. Plus, it looks like a lot of the sheetrock and other foundational stuff is up.

Concern/joy about the arrival of Starbucks in Jackson Heights hits the Daily News...

Starbucks perks angst, excitement

To the rich mix of ethnic businesses in Jackson Heights, a novel addition is coming: Starbucks.

The pending arrival of the gourmet coffee chain has stirred up heated debates about what it means for the identity of the once-working-class community.

Some are eagerly awaiting it, while others view it as a misfit in an area better known for its Little India and its vibrant Latino shops.

The new Starbucks at 78-27 37th Ave. will be nestled among the independently owned stores.

"Some people are truly concerned about the mom-and-pop establishments and how they would be affected," said Marlene Flores, a real estate agent who lives and works in Jackson Heights.

Tania Mattos, who works in an art gallery and also lives in the neighborhood, said she loves the "personal feel" of smaller stores and sees the arrival of Starbucks as a sign of gentrification.

But not everyone is against it.

"Starbucks represents a change in a neighborhood of mediocre mom-and-pop stores," said local resident Robair Russ.

Donald Basse, who has lived in Jackson Heights for six years, believes Starbucks will add even more variety.

"We need to have more upscale businesses like Starbucks in Jackson Heights, so that all people who live here can have retail options," Basse said.

The supporters will not have to wait long. Dan Lewis, a regional spokesman for the Seattle-based company, said the new store is scheduled to open in February.

Wow, Starbucks in JH seems to be some type of historic event.  Got a picture of the blueprints in the window of Starbucks when they started to work on it. I wonder if it will be worth something one day?  :2funny:
Interesting discussion about gentrification.

In response to the Daily News article on the JH Starbucks, the Jackson Heights Blog has an interesting post on the media's portrayal of JH vs. the neighborhood's history and direction.

Seems like they're working fast to get things together. Anyone know the opening date? I guess once we see the "we are taking job apps" then it will be a clue.

It's listed on the Starbucks website now as "coming soon."

Today I noticed that some the furniture has been put in place.  It looks like there will be plenty of plush type seating available.

I noticed that too, and pictures hanging on the wall. Do you think they'll open Saturday?
