A lot of the bars/pubs in Jackson Heights strike me as being hangouts for alcoholics (who need to hang out in some 12 step meetings) as opposed to  social drinkers just  hanging out enjoying a beer or two. I have never been to Legends or ReadyPenny Inn, but, have heard they're  pretty decent. Novo doesn't seem to me to have that bar vibe, more like an upscale restaurant/bar ( i agree about the Manhattan prices). I like Jardi, has a nice continental flavor and good Sangria, and love the appetizers.  Not sure if they have beer on tap though (not a beer drinker).

If you have never been to Legends or the ReadyPenney which bars strike you as "hangouts for alcoholics"?  I agree the bar selection is very poor In JH.  i feel that Legends or Cassidy's are the best bets although each of these is bars are are far walks for those in the eighties.  Being a long time resident it is a shame that many newbees never got sample some of the many Irish pubs there were in JH in the mid eighties.  Roosevelt avenue had about 7 or 8 between 74th and 82nd Street and Northern Boulevard had about a half dozen from 80th to 86th Street.  The neighborhood is finally making a long deserved comeback so maybe more will open over the next few years.

I don't drink beer.  Nonetheless, I do give a huge thumb's up to Legends for the BBQ that's served up in the back of the bar.  The beef short ribs are smokey, tender and delicious.  The bar area seems low key, mostly frequented by folks watching sports or talking about the same.

Went to Terrazo Cafe yesterday evening with a friend and was pleasantly surprised. It is a cool artsy space and was playing pretty good music. They had a nice selection of beer (though the brooklyn tap was on the fritz) and the bartender was really friendly. I plan on going back.

Well, it seems the bartender has a vested intrest - Brooklyn is his favorite beer too  :)

that's what he told me, too.  How hard can it be to fix a tap?  I may have to show up with my husband's toolbox and give it a go...

Sports Bar question
« Reply #21 on: January 19, 2008, 07:40:52 PM »
Hello all JH-ers,
This is a shamefully last minute request: does anyone have suggestions as to where one could go in the neighborhood to watch the Trinidad-Jones fight? It's tonight at 9:00.

So to follow up on my own post: we ended up watching the fight at Dolphins Sports Bar on Northern Boulevard. Very dark, with questionable corners and a gigantic, fuzzy TV that made me dizzy to watch. All in all a dive, and not in the charming sense. But I'll post again if I find a nicer sports venue in the neighborhood.

The Ranger Texas Barbecue At Legends Sports Bar on 71st and 35th Avenue,  isn't bad for a local bar. plenty of TVs and plenty of people to discuss sports with.

Has anyone been to that Riazor Blues (sp?) tapas bar up on 90th and Northern Blvd?  I've driven by it many times, but was curious as to what kind of bar it was.  I thought I saw some neons for draft beers.  My best friend is flying into town this weekend, and I'm looking for some low key bars to take him to close to home.  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Cookie, I'm not that familiar with local bars but Donovans always seems to be a place people mention.  It's approx. 60th Street on Roosevelt Ave.  And my friend loved stopping into the Cavaliar on her way home from work while she stayed with me.  I've been to Donovans but never went into the Cavaliar for drinks so don't know it's atmosphere.  But my friend lives in England most of the year and loves pubs and she liked the Cavaliar (not that the Cavaliar is a pub... it's a restaurant with a bar.)  If you go, let me know what you think of it.
First, do no harm.

Raizer Blue is a Spanish bar (Spain).  Most of the customers are Spanish but you do find English speaking customers.  It has a nice clientele and pretty barmaids.  It has a great jukebox with a good selection in both English and Spanish.  The music is usually very loud so if that would bother you you might not like it.  It gets very crowded after 10PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Donovan's is a great Irish Pub with an older crowd than many Irish Pubs.  Mostly 30's and up.  It is on the corner of Roosevelt Avenue and 58th Street.  It also has food at very reasonable prices but they don't accept credit cards.

Checked out Terrazo last night - and was pretty disappointed.  Place strives to be arty, but it just seems to be in a general state of disrepair.  Manhattan prices, tiny uncomfortable space, and the Brooklyn just tasted wrong.

Can we have a bar/night life forum?
« Reply #28 on: March 31, 2008, 04:30:13 PM »
I had to live here for 2 1/2 years before I learned about the real gem that is Terraza off of 84th and Roosevelt.  And only because someone at E77 told me about it.  Are there any others?

Commuting to Astoria, or worse, Manhattan to find night-life is a major drag.

There is a Bars and Pubs in JH thread on the Restaurants & Food board.

Some nightlife options appear on our calendar and our list of Ongoing Activities and Events.

We don't have a thread dedicated to nightlife yet, so perhaps this thread should serve that purpose.  Let me know if you'd like to change the name.
