Olympic Sized Pool is opening Feb 29 in Flushing Meadows Corona Park
http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_about/parks_divisions/capital/parks/flushing_meadows_corona_park_pool_rink.html

"Opening Friday, February 29, this $65-million complex features an Olympic-sized pool and NHL-regulation ice rink. It is the first of its kind in the city and includes ADA-accessible features.
Flushing Meadows Corona Park Pool & Rink is the largest recreation complex ever built in a city park at 120,000 square-feet.

The Olympic-size indoor public pool, the first to open in New York City in four decades, has an adjustable floor and diving tank for public swim and competitive meets."

We have a treadmill, so we haven't really looked into a gym.  Nonetheless, I've been reading the posts on this thread and just noticed that no one has mentioned the BQE Fitness Club off the BQE in Woodside.  I just checked out their website, and they seem to be having a grand re-opening.  This gym has been around for years and now seems to have added many new amenities.  It's a bit off the beaten path, so you may need a car to get there.

Oh my gawd.  How many "GRAND openings" can this gym have?  I've belonged to the BQE (joined it two separate times--both times ended up hating it because it's usually filthy).  I've belonged to the Bulova Bldg. Time Out gym, Gold's in Astoria and finally settled (for the past several years at least) on the MATRIX.  They're always updating their equipment.  Keep the place immaculate.  And have two parking lots: above and below ground- FREE.  But mostly it's the pizza up stairs that keeps me going there.  I reward myself with a slice.  ;D
First, do no harm.

Shelby2, thanks so much for the info about the new pool!  I had no idea they were even building it.

I'm a swimmer and hate having to go into Manhattan every morning to swim.

It looks like a beautiful facility.  I can't wait to check it out! :D

Hi there,
Below is info about the new set of plates classes I organize at Garden School.
The class runs for 8 consecutive weeks.  Starting March 7-April 25 (Make-up class May 2). Fee $160
The instructor is from a studio in Dumbo, she's really great.
The class is one hour @ 7:30pm.  All you need is a yoga mat and comfortable clothes.
If you need to miss one class, there will be one make-up on May 2.
If you want to join please send an e-mail: margaretomurray@gmail.com

If you want to "drop-in" and not sign up for all 8 classes, the fee is $25 a class.
Thank you,
Margaret Murray

Getting NYSC to open in JH
« Reply #34 on: February 24, 2008, 10:46:38 PM »
I got permission to copy and paste this from the JH families yahoo group. Please take a moment to click the link and send the feedback if you think having a NYSC in JH would be worthwhile!

I spoke with someone at the corporate offices for NYSC last week and asked
them if they were planning to open up a Jackson Heights location. The guy I
spoke with couldn't find any record of a new JH location, however he
encouraged me to tell people to go to the following link and voice their
interest in NYSC coming to Jackson Heights. More specifically, he said if we
made mention of a particular space (i.e., the old Gladiator Gym Space at
82-24 Northern Blvd), and if the response was big enough, they would likely
come and check it out. There is apparently precedent for NYSC opening up
new locations with a large public response.

This is the link:

https://www.mysportsclubs.com/feedback.htm

Let's let NYSC know that there is a huge demand for a gym in JH and that the
Gladiator space would be a perfect location. Our collective voices have been
effective in the past and could be again.

According to Reply #1 in this thread, Gladiator may have closed because of fire code violations.  If those can't easily be fixed, the location may not be suitable for NYSC.  So it might be a good idea to include other ideas for locations if we can come up with any.

Gym in JH/Woodside?
« Reply #36 on: August 29, 2008, 09:31:47 PM »
Hi everyone,

I just got an apartment in Woodside (67th Street & 40th Ave) and was wondering if anyone knew where nearby gyms are?  Or if you know of somewhere that isn't easy walking distance but that has a parking lot?

There is gym called Matrix in Astoria that has a free parking lot.  I think a few JH people go there.  I have been going to various NYSC's (Sunnyside, Forest Hills, Rego Park) but having to take the subway to go to the gym is really inconvenient.  I was thinking of doing the free 2-week trial at Matrix to see what it's like to drive to the gym.

Here's a thread on Matrix http://www.astorians.com/community/index.php?topic=7761.0

There is also a long thread on here that you might want to read through about gyms and yoga and other forms of exercise. http://www.jacksonheightslife.com/community/index.php?topic=83.0

I go to Matrix and I think the price, parking and cleanliness make it a good deal.  I used to go to NYSC in Astoria and it was nice but you had to park in a municipal lot and pay for parking and it was definitely more expensive than Matrix.

Shelby, How is the NYSC in Sunnyside I know it is new but I have never been there?

I like the NYSC in Sunnyside because it's brand new and it's street level with lots of sunlight throughout.  However, it's really TINY.  It's the smallest NYSC I've ever seen.  I have a flexible schedule so I can work out off peak hours but I could imagine that when it gets crowded the going gets a bit tough in there.

There really aren't any gyms nearby?  I'm so upset about that!  I am moving away from Astoria to Woodside and my membership at Synergy in Astoria will still be in effect until April.  It sounds like I may have to invest in exercise equipment for home and then hit up Synergy on the weekends.  I don't make it out to the gym until about 8:30pm and leave a little after 10pm, so it wouldn't be reasonable to drive there at night, try to find parking there and then drive back to Woodside and try to find parking again..sigh.... :(

There are some gyms nearby.  Did you read the long thread I linked to?  There are a few mentioned in that thread like EFN on 78th and Roosevelt and another one called Big Six Fitness in Woodside, but you will have to read the other thread for details.

Time Out Health and Fitness is the Boulva building on 75th st. and 31st ave. is decent and there's ample parking.

Aronan, is this still open?  Bulova had lost a lot of their tenants in recent years and I noticed Timeout was going downhill.  Old machines, pool closed etc.  Has it improved and do you know the cost?  Parking is a big plus for them though.

hmm.. it's been a while since I've been there. So maybe it is gone. It was $43/month when I was going which may be close to two years ago.
