Famous Famiglia Pizza
« on: April 16, 2013, 10:14:17 AM »
The lights are there... (and very occasionally on)... but nobody's home.

Does anyone know why the Famous Famiglia Pizza place in the 74th Street/Roosevelt subway has been in the dark for over a year now?

perhaps they can't find a place nearby to stock up on DiGiorno?

Seriously, that chain has to be the worst pizza i've had in new york city.

I've  been waiting for it to open for a while - NOT because of the food, but because I was curious to see if it'd impact the appearance of the block in any way and give it a different "vibe" if it were managed well.  It commands a substantially bigger retail area than any other space nearby on Roosevelt and if were commercially brightly lit and kept spotless could change the appearance of the train station quite dramatically.  But of course, I also recognize that it could go terribly wrong with inept management and make everything even worse - nothing is more of a depressing eyesore than a dingy looking fast food place.

i'd MUCH rather have one of those cookie cutter KFC/Nathan's/Tim Horton's combos than this. if all we need is "clean," i'll take a carefully managed, privatized bathroom franchise. 48 stalls, no waiting.

Well, there literally is not a single corner of NYC that wouldn't benefit greatly from that! As I said, I just think that it's such a huge retail space that's been vacant for so long that I'm curious to see what it'll look like in action.

:)

i definitely would like to see vibrant retail in that space. i've been living here 17 years and visiting for a decade longer, and it's been blah the whole time. i just wish it was someplace that offered something i might like -- and not someplace that will likely push out a competitor with a superior product (pizza don)

As joopy86 said, I'm excited for Famiglia to open not for the food, but so that there is a retailer in the space.

On my way to work today, I got to peek inside the locale. The counter is up (green mosaic tile), the ceiling painted and floors done. Workers were cleaning the first floor. I regret not having snapped a quick photo!

saw that as well. it will be nice to have something open in that space -- as long as it doesn't displace the far superior mexican carts operating outside. famous famiglia is on a par with domino's/one cut below papa john's on the pizza scale.

"We don't think there are enough pizza places in the area...."

Guess he's not counting the place two doors away....or the one 200 yards away on 74th .... or.....

We do have plenty of bad pizza, lol.  A few that are decent.  Not sure if this one will be any better than the others, and I do hope they keep the place clean.  I'd love to see a full on brick oven pizza restaurant open in the area (not in that space but on 37th or Northern), or another Italian restaurant (not take-out).  But regardless, I'm glad to see the place finally open.

the chain is on par with pizza hut/dominos et al. it's likely to be the worst, and as jeff posited, the most popular in the area.
