The Merlin was around in January and was identified by a guy i know who was doing the kestrel count for the city (he also does central park birdwalks)
The kestrels like the top of roosevelt terrace and later in the day the school on 87th st and 37th ave. They have been around for a few years but they don't nest in either building ....the red tailed hawks i see in spring and fall... The only nest i know of is the one in the Unisphere at Flushing Meadows but that is too far away ....there is also a Cooper's Hawk that likes to sit on buildings between 37th & roosevelt near the pigeons by the 7 train. I have never seen a peregrine in the neighborhood.....mike
Its not an investment....its a NEIGHBORHOOD!

Picking up an old thread after seeing a falcon or hawk today.  Does anyone know if anything more was learned about our local raptors?  And if there are nests in the neighborhood?

Have seen a peregrine falcon twice in Hampton Court. The first time it was standing on the courtyard grass, enjoying a pigeon breakfast. The second time it flew into a tree near our window and seemed to be looking for something similar.

My son saw a raptor in a close fly-by of our 6th floor window just a few days ago. I'm on 88th and 35th.

There is definitely a hawk in residence near to the Elm Ct.  Yesterday 12/21 it landed in the center of the Elm Court garden and spent a good 40 minutes eating something.  I took a picture but only had my iphone so not much good for identifying anything.  Again today 12/22 I saw it land in one of the tree tops of the courtyard with another catch.

I see them.  The crows get crazy and chase them away.  Other birds and animals start hiding.  I hate those hiddeous beasts.  They are killers.  Hope they go extinct soon.

We have a kestrel who comes around every few months on 85th, 37th. The squirrels run and the other birds go silent and sure enough it's around. Last was a few months ago. Munching and dropping huge pieces of entrails. (rat, mouse?)

This type of misunderstanding of nature and ecosystems is part of why the world has been allowed to get so out of balance.

Every creature kills something for sustenance.  Even if you're a vegan, you are eating plants that were once alive.  Hawks and other predators are doing what they were created to do -  keep  the species of their particular prey strong.    There are precious few creatures other that humans that will kill wantonly and even cruelly, without any need to consume what they kill.

Whether you find them hideous or not a world without predators would be a much poorer place indeed!  I sincerely hope you are able, some day, to see the beauty of nature in all its fullness.
