I received an email from someone at the DOT earlier today asking that I confirm that it was the one outside of Dime Savings, which I did. Hopefully they will replace it soon.

OK, that's great. I'm all for local distinctiveness and pride.
But why has it taken me three years to find out about it?
Is it a secret only for insiders?
How about mounting an awareness campaign for newcomers?
You have to admit it's not exactly rational.
I thought it was something to do with computer geeks making a mistake at my expense - not unusual.
Being constantly rejected by websites for incorrect form-filling (unexplained) has been seriously undermining my confidence.

Back to benches. I think they are needed at bus stops, including at the station, and along 35th avenue.

I don't think it's really a secret or anything...every business card, advertisement for a business or piece of mail is addressed/marked that way...not sure how you'd 'notify' people that it's the state of affairs. (not being sarcastic, just that it's just so second nature to me....then again, natives in London probably say the same thing about those 'look left' sidewalk notes).

agree 100 percent about the benches, by the way.

I always knew about the neighborhood thing, but never really thought about why. I wouldn't mind writing "Queens" instead of "Jackson Heights" to save a few letters, but to me it's not really a big deal.

I would think that in internet forms, the street address, state & zip code would be more important than the city. I know if I sent somebody a letter and wrote Queens instead of, say, Ridgewood and it had the correct street address, state & zip, it would get to them.

I live in 11372 like most of you, and a lot of times when I put in my address & zip it comes up as "Flushing" for some reason. I still get my mail.

the post office complicates things even further. they divide queens into zones based on zip code:

anything starting with 111 is in LIC
anything with 113 is Flushing
anything with 114 is Jamaica
anything with 116 is Rockaway

I clearly have too many brain cells devoted to this stuff!

I'm kind of proud to be living in the same zone as Riker's Island!
