i'd respectfully disagree with that "no buy area" characterization, Buzz. there's a strong demand (and low inventory) for houses, and the one sale profiled in the times recently (there's a thread here) shows that we're hitting the $1 million mark, not just for listing prices, but actual sale prices. is it aggravating? you bet. does it make life a bit less unpleasant? sure does. but as everyone seems to agree, it's a few times a year, and not worth bailing over. and, no, i don't envision it becoming a 365 day a year thing anytime soon (and by soon, i mean the next 40 years).

It's way more frequent than a few times a year. I'm around 80th street and 37th ave, just this past Tuesday, i was waking up to roaring planes in the morning and being greeted by them when I get back from work.

So what--properties are selling for a million!
People deny the gravity of the problem to justify high real estate pricing.

Due to the expensive real estate of NYC, whatever properties on the market will always sell as some people will have to sacrifice what ever they don't like for a lower price or for a shorter commute or for a large space.

It is expensive now but it might not always be. Prices are propped now because of low loan rates, but when they go up prices will go down and people will no longer have to sacrifice peace and quiet. Denying the problem is for people who try to benefit from high prices now but it will ultimate hurt the rest.

The planes do not bother me at all. We live near LaGuardia!

If the noise doesn't concern you, the amount of toxic fumes they saturate us should. If you have children, then be doubly concerned. Children are highly susceptible to asthma and other respiratory ailments.

Well, with that in the mix - and reasonably so- we should move to decommission LGA entirely.

Like I said, I chose to live near LaGuardia, I can hardly get them to stop flying over Jackson Heights when I was the one who decided to live here.

"Decommission LGA entirely".......Sounds good to me....or at least change the flight patterns to minimize the negative impact on surrounding communities..

the thing is, if you minimize impact on jackson heights, you maximize impact on college point. if those folks complain, we divert flights over throgs neck/other coastal bronx areas. once they rally, the planes come back to jackson heights. there's no feasible way to operate this airport without flying planes over residential areas. if it were sub-teterboro in terms of usage, maybe that could work, but everyone who has a dog in this fight wants the planes to fly strictly over someone else's backyard .....

I'm at 37th and 79th and I don't understand what the issue is.  I guess I hear a plane or two fly over once a month or so, but I've never given it a thought.  Being able to jump in a cab and be at the terminal in a few short minutes is wonderful.  I love living near LGA.

Car alarms and honking, on the other hand, make me want to kill somebody.

So because it isn't a problem for you, it isn't a problem?

This is a spectacularly disingenuous statement. The flight pattern CHANGED this year. People have lived here for many years without any plane noise; they may have chosen the neighborhood after  renting here for a while, based at least partially on the lack of noise (in comparison to a place like college point)....... then all of a sudden, without any announcement or consultation they get these days on weekends where there are flights every 30s from ~6am onwards that are impossible to sleep through.

"I chose to live here=deserved new plane noise". Do you ever look at your premises and ask yourself, "is it so?". Because if you did I think you'd find that your ideas are completely inane.

Can somebody post the specific flight pattern change that happened? I'm not finding a lot of definitive information. Is it Nextgen related? Or something else?
