Best opening line in a song
« on: March 26, 2008, 09:49:53 PM »
Another thread "borrowed" from our sister site.

Everyone gets excited hearing the opening lyrics to some song.  Or remembers the opening lyrics of a song just because they were so damn cool.  What's yours? With the artist.

It is time for you to stop all of your sobbing.  THE PRETENDERS

Buddy, I love your enthusiasm!  You're quite contagious!

Anyway, here's my contribution:

Every man has a place
In his heart there's a space
And the world can't erase his fantasies

Whiskey Bar was actually a cover of a piece by Kurt Weill in The Rise And Fall Of The City Of Mahogany. I think Berthold Brecht wrote the lyrics.

As for my favorites:

Don't tell me you don't know what love is
When you're old enough to know better
When you find strange hands in your sweater

-Elvis Costello

Your everlasting summer
You can see it fading fast
So you grab a piece of something
That you think is gonna last

-Steely Dan

Gouge away you can gouge away

- Pixies

To all the girls I've loved before
Who travelled in and out my door
I'm glad they came along
I dedicate this song
To all the girls I've loved before

I cried a tear, you wiped it dry
I was confused, you cleared my mind
I sold my soul, you bought it back for me
And held me up and gave me dignity
Somehow you needed me

You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me, you needed me

And I can't believe it's you
I can't believe it's true
I needed you and you were there
And I'll never leave, why should I leave
I'd be a fool
'Cause I finally found someone who really cares

You held my hand when it was cold
When I was lost you took me home
You gave me hope when I was at the end
And turned my lies back into truth again
You even called me "friend"

You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me, you needed me

You needed me, you needed me.

All right Sally Field, it's supposed to be opening lines ... not the whole song.  No wait Sally wanted to be 'liked' not 'needed'.

and we have another Ben Folds Five fan.   :coolsmiley:   thanks Gherm

and J.Prester is singing about his life!  braggart.

These are the opening lyrics from one of my favorite tunes from my teen years.

Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown
The Chuckster has spoken!

Good one Buddy!  I love that song, but Spirit of the Radio is probably my favorite!

Begin the day with a friendly voice, a companion unobtrusive...

By the way, Kashmir is the current ring tone on my cell!

I hope I don't have to name the band:

Hey Jude don't make it bad,
Take a sad song and make it better,
Remember, to let her into your heart,
Then you can start to make it better.
