A planet fitness for Jackson Heights??
« on: March 01, 2011, 12:16:17 PM »
Anyone want or think we could encourage a Planet Fitness in Jackson Heights?
Their website invites location suggestions.  They need 15,000 sq. feet of space.

Yes, good idea! The new building on 83rd and Roosevelt has a large space that is often (somewhat randomly) used as a wholesale clothes bazaar. It is really quite awful, total dump. I haven't been in but it does appear large.

There are also a few empty spots between 84th and 85th on 37th. I wonder if they could be conjoined.

@ShinjukuBaby: Did you make a suggestion through this link? If so, what did you upload for the required site plan?

carrefour:

that is a big, weird space, but i don't think it's 15,000 square feet big - then again, my spatial perception isn't always the best.

For comparison's sake, the Sunnyside NYSC is 15,000 sq feet.  This gym feels really small to me, but of course when you account for sq footage, you have to remember all the locker rooms, office space, recepton area, etc. that take up space.

I would love to have ANY good gym in the neighborhood.  I have never been to a Planet Fitness but if it's a nice one, I'll take it and switch from NYSC.

Not to be a party pooper, but do you think they would open another location so close to the Astoria one?

i belonged to the Astoria PF, and while it is very cheap to join, you get what you pay for. i know it may be impossible, but a YMCA with a pool would be great. very productive community partner

What's the deal with that monstrosity? It seems like it was very expensive to build.

I have not made a suggestion through that website, because I wasn't sure how to answer all the questions (such as site plan, etc.)  I think I may just send an email to the person listed and make a general suggestion for "Jackson Heights", unless we're able to pinpoint a specific site.

Maybe it's for people who want to own their own franchise?

Hey All,

Just found this topic searching to see if anyone had thought of this and although old I'll reply.  I go to the PF in Astoria and although I like it, I def think we could use one here in JH.   I don't think the proximity to the Astoria location is really an issue, I know they have a number of locations out on the island really close together in areas that are waaay less densely populated.  Even if it's fairly self serving to want a PF within close walking distance, I do really think it would be pretty successful here.  I think one on Roosevelt Ave would be ideal because of the subway...I know they wanted some amount of parking spaces according to the website but you gotta figure that component goes out the window in NYC.  Northern Blvd would also be a good idea.  Bottom line is we don't have many gyms here and I feel like a 10 bucks a month gym would be pretty popular around here.
