If you take a look at Astoria, you'll find a significant amount of independent  or lesser known gyms.  Club Fitness, The Matrix, Life Health Fitness, The Rock, Astoria Health Complex, in addition to the chains: Planet Fitness, Blink, Lucielle Roberts, NYSC, and probably more I've missed.  I see no reason we can't support this.  I joined Blink but quit due to the crowding.  I just pay for zumba classes in the neighborhood now, which we do have plenty of.  But I would love to join a gym nearby that had both classes and equipment, that was clean, and not so crowded.  I do believe we have people to support it.

Is commercial rent significantly higher in JH than Astoria? (I forgot about all the independent gyms there. And I'm pretty sure most of the offer classes, don't they?)

Yes, the commercial rents in JH tend to be much higher than in Astoria.

Does anyone know if this is happening?  Based on the crowds at Blink, a Planet Fitness would do very well.  Blink's success really shows that there is strong demand for quality businesses at a good price in Jackson Heights.

those store fronts are undergoing a renovation, so all signs point to yes.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

So, if we are getting a gym worth its salt, maybe one day buzzworthy, supertrendy, explosive rents JH will get a decent bar?

Just saying...

The Planet Fitness website doesn't give an opening date yet; it just says "Pre-opening sale coming soon."

Got a postcard in the mail today advertising pre-grand opening sale.  718-933-4670.

I'm hesitant to sign up before it opens, because if it's as overly crowded and unpleasant as the Blink turned out to be, I do not want to join.  I think I might wait til a month after it opens to see if the crowd level is tolerable.

Isn't it literally $10 dollars a month?
Pretty sure any place is going to be crowded in Jackson Heights...

Yes, $10 per month with a $39 annual fee, plus a registration fee -- right now $1 but probably more when it opens.  Plus you need to have the fees come out of either a checking account or put on a credit card.

Check to see what the cancellation policy is. I was at Blink for a couple months, but the over crowding was just too much, so I found another gym closer to where I live. Blink just required a six week notice.

Also watch for any additional fees -- twice a year blink charged a maintenance fee, so you had to take that in to account looking at your yearly cost. Many insurance plans will also reimburse for gym fees (at least partially) if you go a certain number of times in a given period.
