By the way, I've also enjoyed a few of the movies starring Gael Garcia Bernal.  Among them:

The Crime of Padre Amaro
Y Tu Mama Tambien
The Motorcycle Diaries

At the very least, it struck me as naive and quaint, especially with the way the government has rounded up and detained immigrants in recent years, in this very same neighborhood.

Which government has rounded up and detained immigrants in recent years?

Which government has rounded up immigrants in this very same neighborhood?

Who issued these orders?  That "rabid right winger" Rudy Giuliani, who as mayor, sued all the way to the US Supreme Court to defend NYC's "sanctuary city" policy?  Or maybe that other "Republican", Michael Bloomberg, who also endorses the "sanctuary city" policy?  Or maybe it was that "commander in chief", Jorge W. Bush, who once told us, "I want to remind people that family values do not stop at the Rio Grande River. People are coming to our country to do jobs that Americans won't do, to be able to feed their families."  Was it that guy?

When did this government round up immigrants in Jackson Heights?  Why not substantiate this claim with evidence for all of us?

"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." - Carl Sagan

"Goodbye to the deluded and pathetic sophistry of postmodernists of the Left, who believe their unreadable, jargon-clotted theory-sophistry somehow helps liberate the wretched of the earth. If they really believe in serving the cause of liberation, why don’t they quit their evil-capitalist-subsidized jobs and go teach literacy in a Third World starved for the insights of Foucault?" - "Goodbye, Left-Wing Idiocy", Ron Rosenbaum, NY Observer, October 10, 2002"

Believe it not, I actually get a kick out of reading John Prester's posts.  They're a bit on the eccentric side.

John, when you posted on this thread I was hoping you would have made a mention to the movie Marathon Man, seeing that you posted some pics from the movie on the Phonies thread.

Coffee, life, and wine.  (In that order)

After reading the article on the phoney dentists, that movie and the infamous 'dental scene' came to mind!  I saw Marathon Man about a year ago, pretty decent film.  I was on a kick for a while watching movies from the 70's that feature New York City in them - Serpico, French Connection, Death Wish, Manhattan, Saturday Night Fever.  It's interesting seeing how the city looked back then (crappy!), and how much it's improved since.

I think you were describing yourself above but you nailed me with your list!  Being true to form here, I would just add pizza to my list of intoxicants... and I forgot how great the 70s were for movies.  I loved those films.  I actually worked on Sat. Night Fever way back when as an assistant to the first Director.  Who know Nik Cohn's little article would be such a huge hit.

John, some more gritty 70s films if you're ever in that mood again:

So I finally watched Alfred Hitchcock's, The Wrong Man.  While I admit that this is not one of my favorite Hitchcock films, I have to confess that I did find it somewhat of a gripping tale...not edge of your seat gripping, but fascinating nonetheless.  The frightening notion that a seemingly innocent person may be arrested simply because he/she may resemble a criminal is something that may be considered unconventional by today's high-tech standards, but when you think about it, the concept is not so far-fetched at all.  This story further pokes into the main characters' psyches and proves how such a crisis can immensely and adversely affect not only the accused, but the immediate family as well.

I wasn't aware that this film is based on a true story.  Truth be told, my interest was solely rooted on the fact that parts of the movie were filmed in the neighborhood.  I appreciated the opportunity of catching quick glimpses of Jackson Heights in the 1950s.  Recommended?  Yes. :)

Just a head's up to any Harold LLoyd fans that may be lurking out there.  Turner Classic Movies will be showing Harold LLoyd's, Movie Crazy.  This is one of the very few talkie movies he produced and starred in.

Saturday, March 15th at 9:45 p.m. on Turner Classic Movies

TCM also has a silent movie calendar on its website.  I noticed that Metropolis is scheduled for Sunday, March 16th.  Unfortunately playtime is listed as 12:15 a.m.  I'll try to keep my eyes open!

In the tradition of Rob Zombie, Omar Ali Khan made his directorial debut last year with an indie zombie flick called Zibahkhana (Hell's Ground).  It's touted as being Pakistan's first entry into the gore/slasher film genre.  Anyone seen this yet?

Warning!  Images/Videos on the Zibahkhana website are graphic.

Chuckster, creepy disgusting video.  Love the part where the monster is wearing a burkha.  Has PETA seen this?  Were any animals hurt in the making of this movie?  Where's the Humane Society when you need them?  You know on movies with animals, in this country at least, there's always someone from the Humane Society with his notebook keeping track of "today the dog ran after the bus" type stuff.  Think there's someone like that in Pakistan????  Just joking but I could never watch this movie without having nightmares.  I'm beginning to see you in a new light... wonder what happened to those chickens.... hmmmmm.  :o

:2funny: You crack me up Buddy!  I appreciate most genres of movies.  My now brother-in-law is credited for introducing me to the gore flicks as a teen.  He'd come over on the weekends with the intent of watching movies with my sister.  She'd fall asleep, and we'd stay up all night scaring ourselves silly!  We kind of bonded that way, and even today we reminisce about our gory weekends!

By the way I mentioned the movie to my brother (gore fan), and he told me he watched it last year at the Asian Film Fest in Manhattan.  He says it's pretty good, but has been unable to find a copy for purchase.

Chuckster I'm a big John Cusack fan myself. SAY ANYTHING, MUST LOVE DOGS, HIGH FIDELITY, RUNAWAY JURY are a few favorites.

Anyway, I've come up with a few more old movies that I really like:

MIDNIGHT RUN starring Bob DeNiro and Charles Grodin (love this movie. must have watched it half dozen times.) 1988
CATCH 22 (1970) directed by Mike Nichols
SOMETHING WILD with Melanie Griffith (b4 she destroyed her face with endless surgeries) and Jeff Daniels

It's a shame I can't think of anything in the last few years that I really loved except silly comedies:
WEDDING CRASHERS
SUPERBAD

Oh and almost any comedy out of Australia or New Zealand:
THE CHANT OF JIMMY BLACKSMITH
MAD MAX
DEAD CALM
LORD OF THE RINGS
(Todd I haven't seen the WORLD'S FASTEST INDIAN yet or it'd probably be here)

Buddy, if you like Cusack, rent out Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.  Cusack plays a magazine writer sent to Savannah, Georgia to cover the holiday parties of the local elite.  He ends up covering a murder trial involving an affluent art collector and his dead boyfriend.  In the process, he meets some eccentric characters that truly make this movie interesting.  Check it out!

Wedding Crashers?  I like the Wedding Singer!  I can truly relate to the awesome soundtrack.

Yes, Cusack is great (actually both of them are).  I enjoyed seeing them work together in the Martian Child and Cradle Will Rock.

I also love Aussie/NZ films... Adventures of Priscilla, Babe, the Dish, Cane Toads, Strictly Ballroom, the Piano
