Well there is another way to look at this the folks from Whitestone have to travel to JH for great Mexican, Colombian, Peruvian, Thai and Indian food....oh and let us not forget the BEST bakery in Queens...Canelle's.   ;)

I had a red velvet cupcake from there that made me very :(
It was raspberry flavored or something.

Sad because it made you sick?  Or sad because you wanted more?

Granted Canelle's is a great bakery but when they run out of bread by 1PM, I'm no longer a fan.

It made me sad because it was gross. So gross I couldn't eat it. I find Canelle to be hit or miss. Their bread is also a miss. I'm a bread snob, though.

I do enjoy their other pastries.

I'm just sayin' I'm not gonna crap myself over the place just because it's in my neighborhood. I do think there are better, more authentic bakeries in Astoria.

I agree with you as far as their bread is concerned I head over to Astoria for that but I do find their pastries quite tasty and beautiful.  I must admit I haven't tried their red velvet cupcakes though.  Foxy where in Astoria do you buy your French pastries?

Their rye bread is pretty good-if they have it. My kids love the creole cake

Hmmm. I forget they try to be French. Maybe that's why the red velvet sucks - it's an American thing.

I will try their rye bread, Bella.

Anyone try La Marjolaine Bakery in Woodside?

For special occasions I will trek to the UES to The Two Little Red Hens. They get extra points because they do espresso/latte made to order.

Foxy since you've made it clear that American desserts suck I would then strongly advise you to stay way from The Two Little Red Hens simply because it is chock full of those sucky All-American sweets!  Again what bakery in Astoria do you buy your desserts?

Wow. Another person on this board taking things way out of context. Shocker. I was trying to say maybe their red velvets suck because they are supposed to be a French bakery, thus they probably don't know how to do American desserts well. On the other hand, the French grind their coffee beans to order instead of using those press-a-button machines. So I don't know how French they actually are.

Then again, being a professional chef, I have absolutely no idea what I'm taking about.

I too am a professional cook and know that many desserts be it American, Italian or German can be made with a French technique as are the red velvet cupcakes at Canelle's, the base of the frosting is crème pâtissière which is as French as croissants.........which by the way Canelle's makes amazingly well.  Oh yes they also have flan or if you would prefer the French name for it Creme Caramel.  It's all in the technique.

Yeah, but their red velvet cupcakes aren't good. That's my OG point.

Tonight I will be serving a Chicken Makhani (Indian Butter Chicken), with jasmine rice, paratha bread and pachadi salad (cucumber, tomato, cilantro, topped with a spicy yogurt dressing)   :)
