From the City Room blog:

The New York Times
Putting Queens on the Tourism Map
BY FERNANDA SANTOS

Queens is the first and last place many tourists see when they arrive in New York, but one they rarely visit. Home to John F. Kennedy and La Guardia Airports, it has long been seen as a place to pass through on the way or from Manhattan.

These days, even Brooklyn gets more respect and visitors.

Double-decker tour buses skip it, and tourism guides treat it as an afterthought. If a pack of outsiders is spotted on the No. 7 train as it travels above Roosevelt Avenue, chances are they are bound for a Mets game or the United States Open tennis tournament in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.

A modest marketing campaign that began on Tuesday aims to change that. It is capitalizing on the borough’s unparalleled diversity to promote artists of Jackson Heights, the most diverse of Queens’ 80-plus neighborhoods.

The effort, called June in Jackson Heights, is as local and bare bones as it gets. It came together in a little over a month, and the flier that lists the events that are part of it is far from comprehensive — organizers wanted it that way and, besides, they they had no time to plan for anything more ambitious.

The monthlong series has an appropriate motto, “Experience the world in one neighborhood,” and the ambitious goal of coaxing tourists and New Yorkers who live elsewhere to spend some time in Queens.

Great job to all the people who worked on June in Jackson Heights!  Seems like quite a bit of work was accomplished in a very short amount of time.  It's wonderful to have the Time highlight the event, too!

Look forward to seeing what the month will bring.

Thanks Homeowner !

June in Jackson Heights is a truly grass roots effort. Some staff members from Council Member Dromm's office and a large group of volunteers have been working together to make it happen !

The logo was designed by an artist who lives in the neighborhood, we like to keep it local that way!   :)

From today's:

New York Daily News
'June in Jackson Heights' fest is all about the arts
BY Clare Trapasso

Tuesday, June 8th 2010, 10:06 AM

JACKSON HEIGHTS ALREADY has a reputation for its international flavors and ethnic culinary delights. But now there's a push to transform the neighborhood into an arts mecca as well.

A new initiative called "June in Jackson Heights" encompasses a series of eclectic events, performances and installments to lure locals, Manhattanites and tourists.

Highlights of the month-long festival include art exhibitions, a piano stationed in front of the post office, an Asian-American writer's workshop and a poetry festival.

"This is a multicultural artists community and that's what makes it so unique," said City Councilman Daniel Dromm (D-Jackson Heights), who is spearheading the effort. "Jackson Heights is a valuable asset to Queens that many people in New York City and the rest of the world don't know about."

Dromm created the initiative after he became aware of local artists' struggles to find exhibit and performance space in the area. He said he sees the festival not only as a way to tout the community's burgeoning arts scene but also as a way to draw new customers to local restaurants and businesses.

Hoong Yee Krakhauer, executive director of the Queens Council on the Arts, believes the only thing holding Jackson Heights back from becoming the next arts destination - like Long Island City or Williamsburg - is its dearth of space for artists.

"The cultural community has no place to gather or exhibit or hold large-scale events in an arts atmosphere," she said.

Wednesday, June 16th 6pm-9pm
Opening Reception & Performances
Space 37
86-08 37th Avenue Jackson Heights

QMAD, Queens Media Arts Development, in collaboration with City Council Member Daniel Dromm, invites the community of Queens, and NYC at large, to the exhibition BABEL, the first official exhibition of June in Jackson Heights 2010. The exhibit will run from June 16th to July 1st.

This exhibition explores the relationship of language and the visual arts. Through paintings, illustrations, photography, sculpture, installations, video, performance and new-media, BABEL establishes connections between the written word and the recent explosion of immigrant conclaves in and around New York City. Selected works treat the diversity and plurality of the written language as reflected, incorporated, and/or appropriated in visual arts, performance, and the moving image.

BABEL was organized and curated by New-media artist, Hector Canonge, who was inspired by the earliest mention of the ancient city of Babylon written on a Cuneiform tablet dating back to the 24th Century BC. Selected works also reference the cultural diversity of cosmopolitan centers, and communities -like Jackson Heights- that make up a greater city.

Participating Artists (in alphabetical order):
Gema Alava, Nobutaka Aozaki, Javier Arau, Aileen Bassis, Susan Breitsch, James Chen-Feng Kao, Felipe Galindo, Iliana Emilia Garcia, Janet Goldner, Jennifer Grimyser, Jia-Yi He, Paolo Javier, Jihay Kang, Larry Litt & Nicolas Lee, Carla Lobmier, Norma Markley, Rahul Mitra, Veru Narula, Ann Oren & Zevan Rosser, Renzo Ortega, Panoply Performance Laboratory (Esther Neff, Brian McCorkle, Matthew Stephen Smith), Cristian Pietrapiana, Jenny Polak, Michael Pribich, Elisa Pritzker, Svetlana Rabey, Daniel Rossi, Joseph Gerard Sabatino, Nivedita Shivraj, Priscilla P. Stadler, Anna-Mária Vág, Deborah Wasserman, Andrew Wilkinson, Tammy Wofsey.

Location & Directions:
Space 37, 86-08 37th Avenue, Jackson Heights, NY 11372.
* Queens bound #7 Train. Exit at 82 Street and Roosevelt Avenue.  Walk on 82 St. to 37 Ave.  Turn right on 37 Ave. to 86 Street.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Special thanks to Diane Macari and Louis J. Macari, principals of EXIT Realty Lewis and Murphy, a family run business, serving the needs of the Jackson Heights Community since 1946; and to the board and director of Queens Pride Committee.

Jackson Heights Poetry Festival Workshop at The Renaissance Charter School

Writing The Scary Stuff Leader: Richard Jeffrey Newman All writers face the problem of writing about what scares them. It might be frightening because it is embarrassing or shameful, because it feels too personal, because it might offend loved ones. It might be frightening because it violates religious or other moral/ethical taboos, because it humanizes or makes comprehensible that which many believe should remain beyond comprehension, because it gives voice to people or ideas that have been silenced. Whatever the source of the fear, we should not allow it to dictate what we can and cannot write. In this workshop, we will practice some strategies for dealing with material that frightens us.
