First Tuesdays Open Readings: Poetry at Terraza

The Jackson Heights Poetry Festival is going year-round!

They are initiating a new series of First Tuesdays Open Readings on the first Tuesday of each month at Terraza Cafe.  The first event will be held on October 7th, and will feature poet Charan P.

Sign-ins at 6:30; readings start at 7 pm.  $5 suggested donation.

Here's a report on the first open reading event, held on Oct. 7th.

The next open reading will be held on Tuesday, November 4 at 6:30 PM (make sure you vote first!), at Terraza Cafe, 40-19 Gleane St.

The next featured poet will be McGovern Prize winner Maria Terrone. You can read more about Maria here. Don't miss her reading!

The next First Tuesdays open reading will be held on December 2 at 8 PM at Terraza Cafe, 40-19 Gleane St.  Bring your own work for the open mic, or just come and enjoy the other readings.

The featured poet will be Patrick Rosal.

Featured Poet: Vikas K. Menon is a poet and playwright who has poems appearing or forthcoming in the New Delta Review, TriQuarterly, Catamaran, MIPOESIAS, Bitter Oleander, Brooklyn Review, Toronto Review, among others. He is a staffmember of Kundiman, an organization dedicated to supporting Asian-American poetry. He was a finalist in the Writers at Work competition, and his work is forthcoming in Writing the Lines of Our Hands, the first anthology of South Asian American poetry. His first play, "Lead with Your Left" was produced at the South Asian Theatre Arts Guild Experiment's (STAGE) One Act Festival in Washington, D.C. Come hear him read on Feb 3!

Tuesday, April 7, 7 pm
Featured poet: Barry Wallenstein accompanied by Vincent Chancey on the French Horn
Barry Wallenstein is the author of five collections of poetry. His most recent book, Tony's World, is due out in late 2009. A special interest of his is presenting poetry readings in collaboration with jazz. He is an Emeritus Professor of literature and creative writing at the City University of New York and an editor of the journal, American Book Review. He has received fellowship residencies at The MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire, Hawthornden Castle in Scotland, Fundación Valparaiso in Spain, and le Monastère in Saorge, France and also has traveled wildly giving poetry readings with musicians in London, Dublin, Cape Town, Prague, and Paris. His latest recording is Euphoria Ripens [Cadence Jazz Records] was listed among the "Best Jazz Recordings of 2008" in AllAboutJazz magazine.

Featured Poet: Richard Jeffrey Newman

Poet, translator, essayist and educator, Richard Jeffrey Newman is the author of two volumes of poetry: The Silence Of Men, a book of his own poems and Selections from Saadi's Gulistan and Selections from Saadi's Bustan, translations of two masterpieces of 13th century Iranian poetry. In addition, he co-translated with Professor John Moyne the poetry in A Bird in the Garden of Angels, a selection of work by Rumi, also from 13th century Iran. Newman's poems and essays have appeared in a wide range of journals, including Salon.com, The American Voice, Circumference, Prairie Schooner, Another Chicago Magazine, The Pedestal Magazine (also here) and Birmingham Poetry Review. His work has been anthologized in Access Literature, and the title poem from The Silence Of Men has been translated into Dutch. In addition, he has completed a verse translation of a book-length section of the Shahnameh, the Persian national epic, for which he is seeking a publisher. Richard Jeffrey Newman is Literary Arts Director of Persian Arts Festival, sits on the advisory board of The Translation Project and is listed as a speaker with the New York Council for the Humanities. He is Associate Professor of English at Nassau Community College in Garden City, New York, where he coordinates the Creative Writing Project.

Featured Poet: Jon Sands

Jon Sands is a poet living in New York City. In his first year of competition he was a member of the LouderARTS New York City poetry slam team, the youngest person ever to do so. Subsequently, he earned position as a finalist at the National Poetry Slam in Austin, TX. Jon has toured throughout North America performing and conducting workshops. He is currently the Director of Poetry and Arts Education Programming at the Positive Health Project, a needle exchange center located in Midtown Manhattan. He is also one-fourth of the nationally acclaimed electricity-fest, The SpillJoy Ensemble. Author of three chapbooks with JKpublishing, Jon is perpetually attempting to discover what makes the sloppy muscle inside our ribs tick into such a beautiful mess.

Featured Poet:  Celestine Woo

Celest Woo has just published her first chapbook, Burnished Sol (Pudding House 2009), and has been published in several journals. She is an assistant professor of English at SUNY Empire State College, and also a dancer and choreographer.

Featured Poet:  Denis Jules Gray

Denis Gray is a novelist/playwright living in Long Island. He is the author of 28 books, three novellas, thirteen plays, and over sixty short stories. His novella Benny's Last Blast!!, was published in the year 2002. This past February he released his first audio short story CD "Black Love Notes." BRANT LYON is a writer of prose, poetry, and music. He believes that the last two, though first cousins, should marry, and encourages their betrothal hosting his monthly reading series, Hydrogen Jukebox. As an ‘artivist’ frequently performing at peace concerts and university events around the U.S., or on radio, he also avers that “a rose without thorns isn’t worth sniffing,” so inhales deeply but with care. He is associate editor for Uphook Press and BigCityLit. His most recent or forthcoming publications include poetry/fiction/etc. in Red Wheelbarrow Poets Anthology (vols. I & II), Beyond the Rift, Ganymede, BigCityLit, Cyrano’s Journal, and his poemusic CD, Brant Lyon & Friends: Beauty Keeps Laying Its Sharp Knife Against Me.

Celebrate Poetry Month on April 6, 2010 at the JHPF FIRST TUESDAYS open mic featuring Purvi Shah.
 
Purvi Shah’s debut book of poems, Terrain Tracks (New Rivers Press, 2006), won the Many Voices Project prize and was nominated for the Asian American Writers’ Workshop Members’ Choice Award in 2007. Shah, who holds an MA in American Literature from Rutgers University, is a former poetry editor of the Asian Pacific American Journal and the recipient of a Virginia Voss Poetry Award from the University of Michigan. Born in Ahmedabad, India, Shah lives in New York City, where she recently served for seven and a half years as the executive director at Sakhi for South Asian Women, a community-based anti–domestic violence organization. She is currently traveling, consulting on the issue of violence against women, and working toward a second collection of poetry.
