Rob, I have no clue of what Operation FUN was, but this thread seems as good as any to hijack.   ;)

Memory lane brings to mind retro candies; especially with the Easter holiday almost upon us.  Is it just my personal observation, or have marshmallow peeps stood the test of time?  Are they a New York City or national phenomenon?  How about those pastel colored malt balls and hollow chocolate bunnies?

I'm on a roll here:

Anyone remember candy paper cigarettes
Bazooka Joe
Those straw thingies filled with neon colored powdered sugar (artificially flavored, of course)
The candies that exploded in your mouth (can't remember the name)

There's so much more.  Help!

Next thread... retro toys!

Pop rocks exploded in your mouth.  Weren't they banned because of what could happen if you ate them while drinking coke, or did we make that up?

Remember dots that you had to peel off a sheet of paper?  Also there was some sort of tiny waxy bottle that you open with your teeth in order to get to the candy-flavored liquid inside.

Do people still eat tootsie-roll pops and those lollipops with the chewing gum inside?  Wow, I can't believe my parents let us near all that stuff.  :embarassed:

Hey!  Great memory on all the above!  So glad you mentioned the small wax bottles.  They sort of resembled mini Coke bottles.  BTW, did you ever count how many licks it took to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?

PLAN:  This is the unofficial JHL pop culture thread.   :D  Sorry, Rob.

Hey, no need to apologize ...  I love old junk food as much as the next guy:  Booberry (I know they still make it seasonally), Froot Brute, Reggie bars ...

And I loved Lafaoylpmics and Superfriends ...

(Incidentally, Operation FUN stood for Fufilling Unmet Needs, it was a summer program run out of McClancy (and later Lady of Snows) where teens volunteered to be buddies for disabled kids.  Still intereted how many locals worked there with me back in the day ..)

I had a few friends that went to Monsignor McClancy.  That was an all boy's school, right?  Unfortunately, I don't recall that program and have lost touch with many friends from my teens.

Boo Berry is now seasonal?  What season would that be?  Halloween?

I remember the Lafaolympics, Scooby Doo (those meddling kids), Josie & The Pussycats.  I could go on, but I might embarrass myself.   :embarassed:

McClancy was/is(?) an all boys school.  In fact that's how I began my 27 years working with special needs kids.

Summer of 1983 I was riding my bike by McClancy.  I saw girls ... actual girls!! ... going into the school first week of summer.  As most any teenaged boy would, I followed.

They were volunteering for Operation FUN.  (Apparently every student in Catholic high schools who did got out of religion electives in school.)  The diocese ran it out of McClancy that year (and years prior).  I stayed with the program, and worked their year round events (Mondays with adults recreation at Woodside, Saturday bowling at Hollywood lanes in Rego Park, though from 1984 on it was only based at Our Lady of Snows (ironically just blocks up the same street from the school I teach at now), and campers and counselors were picked up by school buses at the local churches.

Nostalgia aside ...

Booberry is yes only on Halloween, Frankenberry too.  Only Count Chocula is year round now ... and Fruity Yummy Mummy, a rehash of the 70s Froot Brute are gone gone gone.

And yeah Laff Olympics!!  I loved Muttley and the Really Rottens.

History
In 1971, the first two cereals in the line were introduced, the still-available Count Chocula and (strawberry flavored) Franken Berry. Boo Berry was released two years later, in 1973, and Fruit Brute appeared a year after that, in 1974. Fruit Brute was discontinued by 1983 and replaced in 1987 by Fruity Yummy Mummy, which also had a short life and was discontinued in 1993[citation needed]. Boo Berry and Franken Berry are sometimes mistakenly thought to be discontinued as well. In reality, their distribution is just much lower and more sporadic than that of the flagship cereal Count Chocula. The best time of the year to find Boo Berry and Franken Berry is around Halloween[citation needed].

Target and Wal-Mart are among the stores that have been known to carry these more scarce cereals during October in time for Halloween. They can be found year-round in the Midwest at Wal-Mart Supercenters and on Amazon.com, and in the Southeast in many stores. In addition, they have been spotted year-round in some Wal-Mart Supercenters in the East[citation needed].

Somewhat unusual for retired advertising characters, Fruity Yummy Mummy and Fruit Brute continue to be seen on the occasional piece of official merchandise: in recent years, both a resin model kit, and a bobblehead doll have been sold in their images[citation needed].

The commercials for the cereals were memorable as it was usually a battle of the monsters when they would tout their own cereals, but would jump in sheer fright when anything interrupted their attempted one-upmanship of one another.

And yeah I have the Wacky Wobblers (Bobbleheads) here for the Count, Frank, and Boo.  I love that kitschy stuff.

Is the Big League Bubble Gum the one that came with baseball cards in the pack and tasted a bit like Pepto Bismol?   ;D  About 5 or so years ago, I came across a vending machine in a supermarket selling those packaged baseball cards.  Well.... being the baseball fan that I am, I decided to pay the $2.00 for the pack which also happened to include a piece of bubble gum.  When I opened the pack and touched the gum, it broke into 10s of little pieces and dust!  Hey, maybe that pack had been sitting in that machine or some back room shelf for years before it was put out for sale.  BTW, the cards I got were of players from the 70s.

I think he meant BIG LEAGUE CHEW.  The stuff that came in a puch, like chewing tobacco, but was gum.

Nerds I love ... still do.  Just packaged a bunch for the egg hunt Luc is hosting tomorrow (er... today, its 3 am!!!).

Jeez why am I up ...
