okay, i know i risk getting flamed here and i really really really am not trying to be contrarian, but.....

perhaps i have lived in new york city too long (as in 25 years), but i remember a time when people didnt expect every single neighborhood to have every single possible amenity within a five block walk. where we actually celebrated the fact that neighborhoods had their own character, as opposed to a nice, neat "one from columns a,b, c, d, e" and so on kind of thing. the character is the reason i moved to and continue to live in jackson hts as opposed to one of the completely cookie-cutter neighborhoods that make up a good chunk of brooklyn.

am i saying a 99 cent store is inherently better than a wine bar? no. but in reality -- not in pie in the sky theory -- there's a domino effect. replace one too many storefronts providing needed services and you lose those services for good. commercial landlords have proven, again and again and again, that they are both greedy and short sighted, and usually end up evicting the hardware store paying "x" per month for the imported tea emporium paying three times that, only to have the latter go under in six months and have a) a vacant storefront and b) a public that needs to take a subway to buy paint.

i don't know about you, but in reality, i need dry cleaning more than i need mesclun.

I think more than the "imported tea emporium" (which, after all, will generally be another privately owned entity filling a niche need in a neighborhood, and my experience has been that most shops of this type are owned/operated by neighborhood folks. All the little boutique stores in Park Slope are there because those people live there, not because some corporate board in Milan thought it was ripe for expansion) it's the plethora of "big box" retailers and services - CVS, Duane Reade, Bank of America et al - that are in a position to pay more for a commercial lease and drive up the price for everybody else.
In SoHo, old button and thread storefronts were happily co-existing with small designer clothing stores and fancy restaurants for years. It wasn't until Gap/Eddie Bauer/Urban Outfitters/Nike/Bloomingdales/Old Navy moved in that those stores started bagging...

I wish Jackson Heights had its Scrabble sign back....kind of in the same fashion that the Jackson Heights penguin made its return.

I have always liked David's (now Lin's) Taiwanese at 84-02 Broadway.  I love the pork with bamboo shoots, the omelet and the ginseng soup.  One of my co-workers is Taiwanese and whenever her parents are in town they eat there.  The dishes are not covered in gloppy sauce and they are not afraid to add some heat.  When they ask, tell them you want it spicy.

We moved from Astoria and I really miss the nicer restaurants that had brunch on Sundays.  Boy, do I miss Fatty's brunch  :'(

I would also love to have...

...a bookstore within walking distance (but I'm grateful for short ride to the Barnes & Nobles in Forest Hills)
...a good salad/smoothies place
...less noise on the streets (what's up with all the honking?!)
...a wine bar
...more neighborhood cafes like Espresso 77

That said, there are great perks about living here...
... Inner Peace rocks!
... the uruguyan place on 86th & 37th has great ceviche
... unbelievable steak at la Boina Roja
... lots of transportation options
AND
... being able to "own" our place (to the extent you really own a coop) which is the number one perk!  And for that, I guess we can cook our own brunch... for now  ;)

This is a great topic that is worth bringing back.

I think we now have some of the things that people were longing for over a year ago. I know we definitely have a dog run! I noticed recently that Armondo's has a Sunday brunch but I'm not sure if this is a new thing. Unfortunately it does not begin until noon on Sundays. Personally, I really hate the word brunch and prefer to breakfast or lunch.

Like just about everyone else, I'd love to see more public green space. I definitely would not advocate to replace Travers Park's pavement with grass as it is a heavily utilized space the way it is but maybe somewhere, somehow, there could be more green space. One thought is the two lots that are on the corner of 74th Street and 34th Avenue, across from one another. One of the lots has an abandoned house written about here before. http://www.jacksonheightslife.com/community/index.php?topic=4415.0

I'd also love to see some of our restaurants along 37th Avenue offer outdoor eating on the sidewalks. I'm sure this is a zoning issue and may require the sidewalks to be widened. I think it is one of those subtle things that increases the sense of community - you may be walking down 37th and come upon a friend or acquaintance having a meal outdoors, etc.

I lived for 11 years in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn and there was a community based organization that was focused on Myrtle Avenue that did a lot of good things - and some things that could definitely be argued not so good. In any case I'm sure there are some good ideas that could be applied to 37th Ave and Roosevelt Ave: http://myrtleavenue.org/

The last thing I wish for would be to make JacksonHeightsLife.com more easy to search for topics of interest! If there is a way, can someone please tell me what it is. I'd definitely use this site more.

Yes, there's  a very simple way to use google to search the site.

If you have your search term, say "outdoor seating" then this is what you type into the google box

"outdoor seating" site:jacksonheightslife.com

Here's the demo http://tinyurl.com/2cwa4at

Thanks Shelby. I guess I should have said, it would be great if there was a search box on the site. Maybe people would not re-post the same topic repeatedly. JHLife is definitely a great resource but I think it could be more streamlined and userfriendly.
