A battle over control of the local merchants' association divides the 74th Street business community.

From the New York Times:

In Queens Neighborhood, a Dispute Divides Business Owners and Leaves a Festival Dark

Very interesting!  I had just assumed that I missed the Diwali festival this year. Regarding this quote:

"According to Justice Markey, Jagir Singh, a leading association member and the owner of Subzi Mandi, a grocery store, distributed fliers with the wrong election date, then illegally imposed a $50 fee as a precondition of voting."

I am not surprised; Subzi Mandi is my least-favorite store in JH (it's the grocery with the pink and yellow striped awning on 73rd & 37th). The people that work there are so rude - it takes a lot for me to boycott a store, but I haven't stepped foot inside there for at least two years.

As Kissinger might have said, the politics are so vicious because the stakes are so low.

Seriously though, how tacky.
