I wouldn't call dive bombing a raptor 10 times your size "courageous", but like everything else, that's open to interpretation.  ;)

We saw an adult red-tailed hawk on Saturday - much larger than Scrabble and redder in color.  I'm convinced this was part of the adult pair we saw last year.

Come to think of it, I thought "Scrabble" looked much redder.  Maybe I saw Scrabble's mom or dad.  Will have to upload my new pics.

Here is Scrabble's cousin as he/she stares at the camera with attitude,
and dances a little to "She Drives Me Crazy".

Yep, that's the bird I saw Saturday afternoon when I was gardening over at St. Mark's. He was
in a 'borrowed' nest consuming the contents for quite a while.
The nest where I saw him is in the sycamore tree on the corner of 81st St and 34th Ave just
by the Q32 bus stop.

I say borrowed because it didn't look big enough for him/her and the doves and pigeons
were having a fit. Half heartedly dive bombing, but peeling off about 30 feet from where
he was sitting.

Excellent shot!

The bird in TBM's latest picture looks like a Cooper's hawk.  Did it have a long, straight tail with a rounded end?  They are very maneuverable and fast as an adaptation for flying through forested areas and picking off birds.  Lots of great sightings in the neighborhood!  Who says we need park land?!

If you have a little dog then you better watch the skies!

Awww!!!!  I want to see one!  I have loads of pigeon in front of my building because someone keeps feeding them.  I'd like to see this bird do a little extermination!  Somewhat off topic- I saw a flock of geese pass by Thursday or Friday afternoon.  Do they normally fly over Jackson Heights this time of year?  It was startling to hear them honking away overhead.

I think most geese around NYC & Long Island stopped migrating south about 20-30 years ago.  The milder winters and plenty of food were enough to keep them here and they have no natural predator.  Golf courses and farmers on the North and South Forks are struggling with ways to keep them away and their populations are growing.

NYC Peromyscus - was this morning's sighting a Cooper's Hawk? Perhaps a better picture will help.

Happy sightings!

Not to continue with the off topic part (perhaps we should start a bird watching thread? :))

While I haven't noticed Geesse in JH so much, they are all over Flushing Meadows Park especially in the late winter / early Spring. I think that's when they are nesting as I recall seeing many little goslings in April following their mothers around.

In other news I saw a woodpecker outside my window a few days back. It would seem JH is a great place for bird watching :)

The pic posted by TBM doesnt looks close but not exactly like the Coopers Hawk images I Googled.

Great picture TBM!  I'm pretty sure that is a Cooper's hawk...that long, straight tail is a good diagnostic character.  The red-tails have a kind of a wide, stubby tail.  I wish I could see this guy down my way in the low 70's, but alas, we have almost no trees!

Here is a pic of Scrabble I took yesterday morning (Weds, 17th Feb) around 7 AM.  He/she looks cold, and didn't stay that long.  Hopefully I didn't freak out my neighbors across the alley!

That darn bird! I've only seen it once, plus many pictures, and I feel like she/he is a bona fide member of our neighborhood family! I don't care that hawks aren't vegans! Just a touch of the world outside the 5 boroughs is
wonderful!

Live long and prosper, Scrabble!
