I vote for Scrabble : ) especially since we haven't confirmed the birds gender yet it's a good gender neutral name.

I guess Scrabble is ok.  After Scrabble finished its meal the other day he/she was hanging out in a tree when another bird started to harass the hawk.  The smaller bird swooped close a few times and let out a loud screech.  Scrabble didn't budge, but it was interesting to see the interaction.

Wow. Thanks for clearing up the mystery for me. I saw it over the weekend in the driveway behind my house (btw 87th & 88th) but from the distance I couldn't tell exactly what it was.

Pic I took earlier of Scrabble sunning himself (coincidentally six-stories above the bird feeders).

Here is some info about red tails living in nearby Briarwood.

I wonder if our hawk is the offspring of this pair?

The bird was spotted yesterday between the garden homes on 86th & 87th streets. Those crazy blue jays are still diving bombing the hawk.

Scrabble the hawk was in a tree in my backyard.  I watched it until it finally flew away.  Once it was gone a squirrel that was sitting frozen in the same tree let out a series of high-pitched chirps.  I have read that prairie dogs and similar animals have lookouts that signal the arrival and departure of predators so that the colony knows when to take cover and when it is all clear.  I didn't know NYC squirrels had the same capacity.  Maybe it was just a chirp of relief.

I don't believe squirrels are all that altruistic towards each other.  They always act like it's every squirrel for itself.  Maybe the squirrel was cursing out the hawk in absentia   ;)

Subtitles for the squirrel chrips:

"Thank god that thing is gone."

It seems that Scrabble has defected to Astoria where they're calling him Hank!  :tickedoff:

Unless he's in witness protection, we named him first, so wouldn't the Hank thing be identify theft or credit fraud or something ... ? :)

Saw Scrabble again today and he graciously posed for pictures.  He was hanging out in the big tree again for a  long while.  I actually did see the blue jays going after him/her.  I couldn't believe it.  Those little birds have a lot of courage.
