Am looking at Sunnyside and their attempts to put these diverters in. Today was a disaster with a tractor trailer stuck in the narrow streets around the Doughboy park snarling traffic and the DOT construction crews - in every direction. Really god awful traffic with people driving in reverse up the streets and on the sidewalks. People should think long and hard here on the impact to the entire neighborhood. Skillman Ave is the wrong ave to change and I think 34th is not the best choice here but let the planners present their assessments post Covid.
As for teachers parking in JH - yes, it's extremely important and should be a high priority but the DOE should participate in the local planning. They have built a number of new schools with next to no parking accommodations for facilities that educate 7,000. kids! Why not have the lottery system that many schools do? BTW Cambridge is one of many popular urban areas that needed to resort to parking permits for locals along with a bunch of other in Boston and Phila and DC that I am aware of.

Hooray for the plan to turn the Bronx Expressway into a park by decking it over.

Undoing the ills of the Robert Moses car-centric era!

The way of the future is PRO PEDESTRIAN, the world over...

To go against that tide, as the myth says (King Canute and Tide)...results in drowning.

An eco friendly path beckons!

Closer to home, that's true of certain areas of Forest Hills as well, I believe.

And if you can't walk without assistance, or are very fragile from a medical condition or surgery, or are a parent with children or shopping and you need to have the fewest amount of steps possible in your day, are you left out of this plan? What is the Transportation Alternative for seniors? One statistic has more NYC resident over 60 than under 13. Are we replacing Robert Moses (not a fan) with another kind of eugenics that favors cyclists and able body walkers only?

Hooray for Ubers and taxis and non private vehicles.
They are perfect for older folks. And work out less expensive for them than buying and running a car.

Older folks should be thanking NYC for the Uber and taxi system. It saves them $'s in the long run.

This tactic of using old folks to support your pro car position isn't going to work in a city like New York. And New York includes Jackson Heights.

No one is falling for it Itsit.

Particularly not the powers that decide these issues. They are fully aware of car services for older folks.

Hooray for the closure of this particular echo chamber, for our sake.

The more you pushback, the more ravenous the lunatic wing of the OS Brigade becomes. Their hyperbolic ramblings make me long for a more grounded, intelligent and substantive debate based in reality:

My dream? That eventually 34th Ave sounds like an average street in Jakarta, the incessant buzz of dirt bikes, motor scooters and tuk-tuks piercing the calm air like a yoga mat with a bayonet on the end of it, as senior citizens engage in hand-to-crutch combat over who gets the next non-unionized Uber driver to take them to the doctor. A man in an orange work vest (not a Halloween costume) patrols the avenue with arms horizontally outstretched holding a phone in his right hand, screaming "Mine! Mine! Mine!" into his Live Instagram stream. Smoke and fumes from the cheap engines choke the air, melding with the aroma of nasi goreng from the plentiful food carts setup along the median where denizens with thermos wine congregate to toast one another on a job well done. Chain link fences erected around the school "recess zones" have been painted in bright colors with lead-free paint, but the engine fumes cancel out any health benefit to the children, who stare blankly from behind the fence at a changed world, then go back to playing with their Hot Wheels. I walk my bike through a hazy cloud of putrid oily smoke, my burning eyes glazing past vendor stalls selling organic cider donuts. A 68 year old volunteer drags an unnecessary barricade into the street, but the man in the orange vest stops her, puts a hand on her shoulder, focuses his camera on her face and calmly reassures her, "We've won... We've won." But she doesn't speak English.

Yes, you have described perfectly the chaos that is New York. Our glorious city.

PS On this forum I have been called left wing and right wing. Love this and will miss the confusion.  :^)

You must have very little life outside of JH or are independently wealthy. Any idea what an Uber to Jones Beach or Huntington costs. Any idea what happens during bad weather or rush hours to those prices? The amazing thing about the anti-auto people is they think DiBlasio is part of the problem, when he's the only politico with any real power on your side. I predict the new mayor will spend the first six months of his administration undoing most of DiBlasio's reforms, so we'll see what the future brings.
Put aside your phobias and you too can pass the road test!

The cost of running a car in NYC is $250 per week. $1000 per month. I can't afford it. Glad you can.

Figures from 2019...(cars probably cost more now) The average new-car price was $37,285 in 2019, according to Kelley Blue Book. That's nearly 1,500 cab rides that cost $25 or less, so you could take 150 cab rides every year for nearly a decade for that amount of money. And that doesn't include gas or insurance or tolls or parking etc.

You don't have to buy a new car, you know. And you don't have to own a Mercedes. As for ride share apps and public transportation, we are still in a pandemic, and these might not be the safest modes of transportation for seniors.

Out of the rabbit hole of pro car or anti car.

The DOT PROPOSAL for the Open Street allows private vehicles. For seniors or non seniors.

Hooray for the DOT proposal.

Very sad this week to see how seniors have to squeeze their 34th Ave front door pick up needs into the 1 1/2 hour street cleaning schedules. But hey we need street closures 13 hours a day, 365 and seniors are on their way out, right? Communities who have fought for inclusivity are getting fed up! It's too much time particularly in the winter months like now.
Those that live right next to or above outdoor dining are having had it too. Maybe we can join forces to find the right way to expand that is inclusive of all residents needs.Waking up to poop in your doorway sounds awful (see below) but where do folks go to the bathroom on 34th Ave, dare we ask?

Moros was the Greek God of Doom and Gloom. Mankind was saved from Moros and his terrible pessimism and negativity by Prometheus... who gave people the gift of hope and light. (Enlightenment)

Obviously Moros is still around...dooming and glooming.

Hooray for the enlightened DOT plan for the OPEN STREET!

Thanks Lochezia! Just back from the woodshed - do you know this term? Or the wonderful book
by a former JH Towers resident and stellar painter, Jack Whitten*? It's where you do the ruminating
and thinking and reforming of ideas after having them percolate for awhile in your head. One thing
that I can't figure out as I pass it on 34th ave at the 69th Street BQE overpass is a new bike rack.
This is a god forsaken area and no one in their right mind is parking their bike in this bird crap laden
area! But we know the DOT are not savvy about lower JH and have made some utterly ridiculous
statements like there are no bike lanes anywhere around here...hello 31st Ave beautiful bike lane.
So a new bike rack for the Open Street group, I imagine, a few yards from the other two bike racks
in front of the new school (which are barely used) and sadly, no bike rack for IS230 a few blocks up
the street! What gives with these people? Please explain the random bike rack dropping, someone?
