The people discussed in this thread are human beings with substance abuse and/or mental health issues. Instead of calling for policing and punishment, how about some compassion? If one feels strongly about not wanting to see people passed out drunk on the sidewalks in the neighborhood, consider joining or starting a group to give them the help and support they need to get them off the streets and simultaneously improve their well-being and the health of the neighborhood.

I'm just going to be the one to say it. I am maxed out on compassion. Empathy, compassion, excuses, and endless understanding/coddling is getting us as a community nowhere and clearly not helping these individuals either. I have called DHS/311 many times and personally witnessed a refusal of outreach efforts as well and the situation keeps getting worse, not better. We're complaining about 82nd street, but has anyone even been to the corner of 83rd and Roosevelt? It's literally a poop-strewn toilet now. Literal poop on the walls and sidewalk. What is HAPPENING to this neighborhood?

Back to 82nd Street...I've had to leap over a streaming flow of urine in realtime. I have to hold my breath to walk down the block to get to the subway. I actually LIVE on the block and I am now strongly considering moving out of the neighborhood because I am realizing that I am just not aligned to what's happening here. Living like this is not acceptable to me. It's stressful, unpleasant, and there just seems to be a general apathy from our elected officials. They'd rather focus on 34th Avenue, as if that's the ONLY block that matters in Jackson Heights.

The irony is that folks are paranoid about COVID but the public health consequences of excrement in the streets is Third World...and disease from that situation is possibly worse than COVID.

The public health implications are real.

KGDHP, I'm inclined to agree with you; we shouldn't need to put up with this. Our elected officials will likely continue to be useless until after the election since they don't want to risk losing votes. And let's face it, they weren't all that helpful to begin with. I guess the only thing we can do is continue to put pressure on the powers that be to do something. It's exhausting though...

Irony upon ironies. Elected officials are worried about losing votes by stopping Third World diseases from happening in their electorate? Consequences gone berserk  due to "Virtual Signaling".

The tables will turn. Virtue Signaling will go out of fashion. Pro-active politicians will be elected. (eg Eric Adams)

This morning I sent an email to Councilmembers Francisco Moya and Daniel Dromm, asking them to arrange for a meeting with the JHBG, 82nd Street Partnership, the 115th/110th Precincts and the Department of Consumer Affairs (and any other agencies they think necessary) to address the concerns around inebriated homeless people and street vendors that have made our "main street" of 82nd Street an absolute mess.  I sent them the link to this thread so they can understand it is more than just one person's complaints.  I will keep you apprised of the progress.  We shall see.

If we do not hold our elected officials and City agencies accountable, who will?   And how about those running for office - when will they ever want to address these types of issues?  Pathetic.

I appreciate you so much for doing that. I actually will do the same (again...sigh). On Nextdoor, there is a whole thread about Poop Alley, so I might link to that as well.  I worry tremendously that Danny Dromm is just going to disregard us as a bunch of NIMBY bigots. Have you seen his response to a lady on Facebook when she brought up vendors on 34th Avenue? He straight up called her a racist on a public forum. If that's the mindset he's in, it's truly no wonder why nothing gets done about the situation here.

Moya doesn't seem to comment publicly like that, but I am not sure he's focused on these quality of life issues.

I would also recommend calling the building management and being a squeaky wheel: Kent Realty: 718.353.8368. I called them back in April (Still saved the VM), where they told me they're aware but there's "nothing they can do." Um, YEAH RIGHT. How about at least a power wash? Why not board it up like the space further down the block? I just don't get people's apathy.

There are solutions for homeless individuals.
Homeless Shelters are all over NYC.
Near here as well, on Astoria Bld (Westway Motel) and Queens Bld (Pan Am Hotel)...

There is no reason these folks are on the streets...and using the streets as toilets.

I have been away for over a week since posting the photo of the cesspool in front of Burger King.  Looks like nothing has changed, except that the stench is possibly more vile...I suspect that if this encampment (and some of the others that are sprouting up all over Jackson Heights) were in front of Danny Dromm or AOC’s or any of the other local pols’ offices, something would have been done a long time ago.   Do we really need to be subjected to these 3rd world conditions in our backyard?

Just an update...strolling down 37th Avenue today, and see that the post office drunkards are out in full force.   Also, on the same block as Food Dynasty is this fellow who has been camping out lately on a cot or bed during the day...37th Avenue is becoming the Skid Row of Queens...

When was this photo taken? I haven't seen them at the former Burger King in the past couple of days (July 3-5) days and had hoped that our efforts were paying off.

I also witnessed three Hispanic drunkards with rubicund cheeks lying flat in front of BK on Saturday afternoon. They were passed out and people could've hurt them and they wouldn't even know it.  Empty beer cans surrounded them. I'm frustrated as I feel sorry for them (they could've been illegal immigrants with nowhere to stay/go), but also mad why they allowed themselves to band with accomplices and got drunk like that.  I mean, you can't even function properly at work in such condition.

Hi, I took this last photo two days ago.   I’ve seen these guys boozing it up on 82nd Street since I got back on Saturday.  I doubt they ever went away.  Same colony of drunkards as before.

Report encampment to 311 https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-02253#:~:text=Report%20an%20encampment.&text=Officers%20from%20your%20local%20police,of%20Homeless%20Services%20(DHS).

Also contact Officer Bayron Gonzalez, Community Affairs Officer at 115th. BAYRON.GONZALEZ@nypd.org

Not sure if Community Board is also the right place to submit but can't hurt    communityboard3@nyc.rr.com

I would suggest contacting local elected officials, but I find them useless.

I do have an update after speaking to the retail management company. Couple things:

1. The former Burger King space has been rented as of last week. New occupant plans to take possession within the next 2-3 weeks. Cleanup/buildout is first priority. No update on what the tenant is - they were not able to share. Please lord let us hope this is true and is a solid deal.

2. Another resource to reach out to in addition to the resources Shelby shared (thank you!) would be the 82nd Street BID. They represent business interests primarily, but have mentioned that not a single Jackson Heights resident or owner has reached out to them about this issue (not sure if that's true, but that is what was said). They use our voices/support/involvement to get additional support from the city. It's important to show them that we care as well.

On a side note - I still don't understand how CB3, which works directly across the street, doesn't address this issue! Like WHAT?
