Even tho it's across Roosevelt, and further, Target is going to give the supermarkets a run for their money. They are going to have to lift their game.

I will definitely buy some groceries there regularly.

It's a far more pleasant, less cramped experience in the grocery section in that Target.

And the prices are ok.

It's small, but a nice addition to the neighborhood.  Hard to see how the Duane Reade stores are going to compete with the Target prices.  They were playing nice music too which made it enjoyable to walk around the store and look around.  That whole corner with the Target, Chick-Fil-A, Starbucks, Chipotle and Smashburger looks nice.  Hoping it might encourage the rest of the establishments on that block to up their game.

Well, there goes that idea. To go and pleasantly shop for groceries leisurely @ Target.

The line along 82nd Street to simply get into Target  is insane.

If past history is any indicator, the other stores will more likely go out of business rather than step up their game. Rents will go up and local stores that do not have the purchasing power of national chains will find it hard to compete. The proliferation of name brand stores at the cost of local businesses is one of the things that costs neighborhoods their unique character, but it seems to be what people want.

There is plenty of unique character on Roosevelt Avenue that is here to stay.  The architecture along 82nd street (particularly on the block between 37th Avenue and Roosevelt) has the potential for something unique, charming and quite beautiful.

These brand stores represent "The American Dream".

They project part of the reason immigrants move to America. Economic reasons.

Charming, they ain't. Surburban, definitely.

But they are VERY American.

And in an immigrant neighborhood, these stores are aspirational.

Hence the long lines along 82nd Street just to get inside that Target.

And as Rita Moreno sings in the film version of West Side Story, "I want to live in America".

That's the history of immigration in NYC. And thus the story of Jackson Heights.

For me, Target is good for cleaning supplies, cereal, office supplies and holiday-related stuff.  When it comes to perishable goods, like fruits/veggies, dairy, and medicines, I will forever support Mango Rico and other local grocery stores (cheaper and fresher) and chain drug stores (yea, I know, just more convenient for me most of the time).

I believe the long line is just a novelty and shall die down once people realized there's really nothing 'special' sold inside. However, I am glad Target is bringing employment to the community.
