I think the real issue is maybe that none of those scenarios are natural or sensible. But then - consumers these days are increasingly gullible and assume everything in the world is theirs for the taking so not too surprising. After all- they don’t call us consumers for nothing.

Jains find it sensible to honor life by eschewing root veg. if you only honor the lives of certain creatures, that's your choice.

Are people really this clueless in 2019? Cows bred for dairy production are kept confined and are constantly impregnated so that they continue to produce milk around the clock for their babies but those babies never get the milk. Their young are ripped away within hours of birth, the females are destined for the same fates as their mothers while the males are sold for slaughter as veal. Not rocket science, people. Veal is young cow, mammals produce milk to nourish their young just like humans. So next time you guzzle that nasty glass of hormones and mucous think about a cow sucking a human teet, or an udder or something. Eye roll.

OMG why are you so miserable? Clearly we have different tastes and I do not need your "holier-than-thou" attitude telling me what I should think or feel. I like cheese. UNAPOLOGETICALLY. I am glad you have a standard of ethics that you abide by, but you don't need to impose them on me or anyone else here.

Sorry to interrupt the debate about ethical food but...the shop is a lovely addition to the neighborhood. Bought some nice pain d'Avignon and Jersey Cow cheese. Have been trying to wean myself off cheese for my diet and this place will make it more difficult, but am still glad it's here. It deserves support...

I was able to visit the new cheese shop, and I am so happy it is here + open!
They have a good selection of different cheeses, as well as some dried sausages & even a country pate.
The bread selection was also good, I purchased a baguette, but saw they also had other types of loaves available. Just stopping there inspired me to pick up a few things, and we enjoyed a nice lunch at home.

Really wonderful little shop. these folks are full of knowledge and passion about the product they sell, and contrary to a lot of what is being said here, the farmers that produce a majority of their cheeses treat their animals more ethically than can be said about any of the meat served at every single other grocery store and restaurant in Jackson Heights. I'm not sure why the conversation about this shop has gone in this direction, but not every other spot discussed here. Grass is often what makes cheese taste good, grass means access to pasture. Anyway, back to the topic at hand. This place is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. Now we just need a fish market and decent butcher shop and we will be all set!

it should also be noted that the proprietors are both very gracious and good with customer service -- something that's not always a given for first-time shop owners. was in last night just before the scheduled closing time, and there were three or four customers, and all of us were treated really nicely and not rushed out the door (as is often the case at places that put a super-hard close on closing time).

I appreciate your enthusiasm and am open to learning and being aware. If you would discuss without being punitive, you would get more value out of your post.

ndumont, do you know if dairy farms in Europe are also known to be so cruel? Is the USA particularly egregious? I wonder if stuff like this is in part why Canada was not willing to buy our milk.

If you feel strongly about how the cows are treated, and I do wish more people thought about it, you can buy milk from smaller dairies that take better care of their animals. Ronnybrook, for example.

I really like this place! The owners are super friendly and they have put together a well rounded and thought out selection. The prices are reasonable, and while Despana will remain my go to for Spanish cheeses, Stand Alone will save me trips to Manhattan and Astoria for French and Italian.

I saw that Espresso 77 is partnering with them for their cheese boards. A perfect match. it's always nice to see local businesses supporting each other.

Now they have several nice sandwiches. Prosciutto/Mozzarella, Gruyère/Ham and a Mozzarella/ tomato. Very tasty.
