Yes, you are correct that she didn't *have* to give a reason and she did. It's also a public message board where people can give their opinions on items posted.

Having rescued several cats and kittens (most abandoned) from the streets, etc. myself, it sucks to see someone giving up a supposedly well loved animal for such a shoddy reason.  When you adopt an animal, you adopt it for its lifetime, not till something better comes along.

I'm really not trying to start an argument, it just makes me sad to read things like that and I couldn't sit back and shut up about it.

I saw on NY1 yesterday that in December and January the ASPCA is offering free adoptions of cats 3 years and older.   They also had a bit about the Center for Animal Care and Control (CACC), but I missed it.   This is the place to most directly, and quite literally, save a life!  They have adoption centers in Brooklyn and Manhattan as far as I know.

Wherever you adopt your cat from, ask them to show you how to clip its claws (assuming it hasn't been declawed of course).  Also, and this may seem obvious, but for a new owner I would say generally speaking friendlier cats are easier to care for than shy ones (i.e. ones that like to hide).

Are you still looking for a cat to adopt?  I used to rescue kittens in our common garden here in JH.  A former student adopted two of these kittens.  They are now four and six, both males and both very sweet.  Sadly, due to some family problems, she must find a new home/ homes for her cats.  If you would be interested in adopting two, that would be great since they've been together four years. If you only want one, that is okay.

Being an older person myself, I always adopt older cats - especially because everyone wants babies and the shelters have a hard time finding homes for older cats.  They have all been lovely creatures and very grateful to have a second chance with someone who appreciates them.  A good shelter (I am fond of Kitty Kind at Union Square in Petco) will give you lots of help at choosing the right cat for you.  They know the personalities (catalities?)  and habits of their cats and they will steer you right.  I always have two cats so they keep each other company when you're not around.

For healthy diet information, I would refer you to a book by Richard Pitcairn, DVM.  I forget the exact name of the book - something like Natural Care for Dogs and Cats, but if you Google it.....  He was one of the first holistic Vets and he really is a pioneer in the field.  Wysong is a good food but it's expensive and sometimes cats don't like it.  You can get a good quality canned food (dry food is not recommended for older cats because of kidney issues) or you can make your own.  The Pitcairn book has a wealth of  info. about food, supplements, etc.
