The neighborhood is sorely lacking healthy takeout options
« on: February 16, 2019, 11:34:36 PM »
I can imagine that this has likely been discussed before. But I didn’t see any recent threads on the subject. I am talking specifically about a place that offers things like market plates, rice/quinoa bowls, healthy salads, shakes/smoothies, breakfast, etc. You all know the type of thing I’m getting at. Along the lines of “Create” in Astoria. I truly think that somebody could make a killing opening up a spot like this. Is there one I am missing somewhere?  The $6.49 Uber eats delivery fees ordering from further out places gets old real quick.

Closest we have is Just Made 4 U. There briefly was just such a place called Fresh Spilt Milk in the space that is now Mama Rosa's Pizza on 37th--and it survived only a few months. That was about a year ago. Owners must have been inexperienced or just didn't  have deep enough pockets--the food was good, too, and I was very sorry to see them go.

Well I guess that disputes my assertion that somebody would make a killing with a spot like this lol. I like to give the benefit of the doubt that it isn’t only white yup types moving on from other overpriced areas that want this type of option.  Perhaps I am wrong though.

And yeah, I’ve been to Just Made 4 U. It’s not bad at all, but still not hitting what I’m hoping for completely.

Fresh Spilt Milk closed after 4 months. Although some reported back that the food was good, there were also a lot of complaints (on here) that the food took too long to make, there was no menu online, the interior was not well-designed or appealing, the name had too many inexplicable apostrophes in it and was therefore confusing, the windows were dirty, etc. I am not sure that the fact they were only able to survive 4 months is any indication that a healthy cafe that knows what they are doing would not do well here.

I agree that Fresh Spilt Milk had a sort of amateurish quality to it, and that a more professionally run health-food place would do well here. Just Made 4 U is filled with people who do not resemble displaced Brooklynites all the time. I think the appeal of this kind of thing is very broad. I hope someone else tries it.

It wouldn't hurt to approach them and/or send them an email suggesting it.

It also didn't work with Bareburger or NYSC or Panera. Those are a few that people have tried.

I honestly don’t think that the bigwigs at any of these companies give a single F about what people are emailing them recommending lol.  They’re gonna do what they’re gonna do. Perhaps the smaller franchises might be different though.

They absolutely do not give a rat's aX#@ what anyone suggests. Regarding Bareburger, it seems as if they have turned into a mostly take-out/delivery operation. Some or most of their locations have become takeout/delivery only, I believe.

Serious question: do you people cook? or do you need a restaurant option for literally every meal? Sorely lacking seems like a bit of an exaggeration when you can easily make healthy meals at home.

I can't imagine what people's finances look like if you're going out for regular meals. Like, I'm actually having anxiety over paying $6.95 to Uber Eats grain bowls.

Yeah we cook. And then also sometimes we get takeout. God forbid there be one healthy place as described and not only middle eastern, asian, and spanish options.

Is it odd to you for folks around these neighborhoods to desire a trader joes close by as well?

I'm with you. I go to the NYSC in Astoria and am always so happy to have all those options for healthier takeout when getting out of the gym. I also make a special effort to travel to Manhattan to go to Trader Joe's about once or twice a week, so I'd prefer to have one closer.
