I got a reply from the owner. We all need to hear all sides of the story. I wish him the best and hope he will be able to make a bold return. Landlords aren’t known to be empathic...

“ Hi,
Sorry i have been busy with a lot of financial issues so, couldn't reach out earlier.
We didnt get any rent concession throughout the pandemic and when we couldn't meet the payment last month due to lack of business we were forced to leave the premises. Thank you for reaching out to want to help. It means a lot.”

Received the same message on Instagram this afternoon. They also added the following:

Chef will make an official post ASAP. We were not prepared to announce officially because we were still trying everything in our power to come back to our beloved community but it has just become financially impossible as of now.

We are continuing in our Glen Oaks location try to save it and hoping we can come back to JH after this is all over.

That's a non-answer to the question. I wonder why they can't be open about whatever the situation is. Seems like they can't or don't want to. How does emptying out the storefront relate to "trying our best"? Very mysterious.

They don't owe anyone any answers about anything. Seems rather entitled to suggest they do, I'm sure this wasn't easy for them, let's just leave them alone and let them deal with this in their own way.

Thank you HFM! it's incredible how inconsiderate people are, relentlessly demanding answers, with all the possible financial strain/stress businesses may be facing.

I got this response, too. It's surprising that their business went down over the summer since that's when we had outdoor dining, etc. It really didn't seem like they invested much in outdoor dining (the bus stop didn't help, I'm sure, but what about on 37th or further down the block?).

So I guess they gave out the same answer to all the IG enquiries, though I did get to chat with a 'staff' and I wish nothing but the best for them. While they don't owe us an answer, it would be nice to find closure and let people who care about them know what's going on. If they're closing (even if temp), it would definitely drum up some businesses, which would pay off some back rents and let us say good bye (for now). The chef must be going through a lot (like most businesses nowadays). Farine is a very special place in JH, kind of like La Boulangerie in Forest Hills. It's one of a kind.

So the thing about this is that they may not “owe” us answers but they went about communication in the absolute wrong way. I mean they flat out lied to the community by saying they were doing “kitchen repairs.”

Why not be transparent? Also, the chef is a business partner of the market next door. Or at least that’s what he was telling people. So give me a break...there was a conscious decision to go with the more profitable option.

I’m honestly frustrated bc it was such a nice community addition that was unique and now we have this junk heap store in its place. The least the market could do is TRY not to take up the entire sidewalk space!

Well, one thing about COVID. All those folks who were over-reacting about "gentrification" can take a break from over-reacting now.

Thanks KDGHP. Exactly. Saying that people wanting to know the status of a local business they value and have been supporting with their dollars and patronage is "entitled" is like saying someone wanting to know why their romantic partner suddenly disappeared without a word of explanation is "entitled." Of course you want to know what is going on--you've had a sort of relationship with them and you want to know: will they come back? Why did they close? It's perfectly natural and not "entitled" and also perfectly natural to be pissed off when you find out that they lied to you about it.  At a time like this when businesses are closing left and right for obvious reasons, why NOT be transparent and communicate that you are trying to work things out so you can re-open (if that's the case at a point in time) or you have to close, and thanks so much to our loyal customers, and we hope to be back someday. That's just good PR and good business. It was disappointing that they handled it the way they did.

ljr, totally agree. We supported them. They positioned themselves as part of the community and then left without a peep. Why not be transparent? Everyone is having a hard time now.

To me this especially stings because their other location seems to be doing well (at least, it's open).

And I'm gonna be NIMBY here for a minute: do we *really* need a huge supermarket on every block? There's literally a full-service supermarket on every block between 77th and 72nd. I guess on the plus side we won't have to walk that far when we run out of something while cooking!

Like I wrote before... The supermarkets are profitable because Jackson Heights is an Indian/Bengali supermarket shopping destination for many Desi immigrant folks in the region. Much like people would go to the UWS for kosher pastrami. Or Greenpoint for borscht and Polish delights. Or Chinatown for...you get my drift

NIMBYS have no say in this.

Yep, farine is gone. The supermarket has expanded and where once were showcases of decadent pastries are now rows and shelves of fruits and pantry stables...but got to say the staff working there are friendly and prices are affordable.

So, so sad.  Farine was one of the few nice places in the neighborhood.   :(

The third world grocer that took Farine's place has installed the most awful glaring LED exterior lights imaginable.

it's partially owned by Michael Mignano, who owned/owns Farine. is Long Island the third world?

This is officially the first time I've heard people complain about having too many grocery stores. Isn't that a good thing? I love the broad range of options for grocery shopping in JH. I can find most ingredients within a few blocks, even ones that are not typically found in US grocery stores. If we lived in a food desert, I think that would be a valid thing to complain about.

We lost something that was great for the neighborhood and was replaced with more of what we already had in abundance.  They installed new lights that blanket the area in a eye-bleeding lumen level from dusk till dawn.  What’s not to complain about?
