I'm sorry to see Farine go, but I don't mind walking a few blocks further to get far better pastries at Cannelle, and as for that, Lety's has excellent pastries and better coffee than Farine or Cannelle. We live amidst an abundance of great food and great desserts!

That's a non-answer to the question. I wonder why they can't be open about whatever the situation is. Seems like they can't or don't want to. How does emptying out the storefront relate to "trying our best"? Very mysterious.

i like Cannelle fine, on a par with Farine, but i'm not always in the mood to walk three-quarters of a mile for a croissant.

As I said, I'm sorry to see Farine go. My point is that we are lucky to have so many options.

Are people eating foods that they can not heat at home, like a cake? Farine was a treasure in this neighborhood.

I went to Cannelle once years ago. I did not like it. There was too much shortening used with the butter to save money. Maybe they have changed. I would not know. And, yes, it is not even in my neighborhood.  Maison Kayser is better in Manhattan. (also, not in my neighborhood, but worth traveling for) They may close.

Well, Cannelle is about 8 blocks from me, so whatever neighborhood boundaries I'm crossing, it's really not a problem.

Canelles' is an easy walk, drive, or you can hop on the Q47--their croissants and pastries were superior to Farine.  Unfortunately they do not have any outdoor seating--the space in front in the parking lot is being used by Bistro Eloise.  Would be nice if Canelles also put out some seating.  As far as Farine, I enjoyed their brunch, sandwiches, and dinners more than the pastries--not sure why they didn't take advantage of outdoor dining.  They never seemed to get their act together as far as efficiently managing a restaurant--maybe I will visit their Glen Oaks location at some point.  Overall, will miss having their standard of food in that part of JH.

I passed by Farine two days ago late morning and I could vaguely hear construction sounds coming from within...

Why are they continuing to store what looks like Indian rice and flour in the window.  Maybe it will end up being another large Indian supermarket--not really what is needed to add to the congestion between 73 and 74 Streets.

Michael Mignano is involved with (a partner in?) the supermarket next door. i posted a few months ago that he was planning to open a store in the then-vacant Meghna space, but didn't think it would be a South Asian place.

I don't know how reliable this is. Yesterday I heard that the Farine owner was planing to reopen the space as a restaurant.
I also channel Gladys Gilbert!

Maybe someone who had visited the Glen Oaks location can chime in, but I've read some pretty negative reviews (ok, it was on Yelp, but needed to start somewhere) on the food and interesting why Farine would offer so many bargain meal specials when they rarely did that in JH.  I missed the cheesecake and pastries as much as others are.  Just seems the owner is a more competent baker than a business person.

Happened to pass by Farine's Glen oaks location on my way to Usha Foods...it is much smaller than the one in JH--not a full restaurant, and next store was a Premium South Asian market (that is the same name as the market in JH that is next to the old Farine. They had a limited menu of sweets and sandwiches, and saw some Indian sweets mixed in with the pastries. Who knows how the space in JH will end up...
