Shelby, I take Ditmars back home too.  You have to go around the block to get back on Ditmars cuz of the one ways but it turns into  82nd Street when you cross Astoria Blvd.  Much faster than Steinway.

I never bought fish there.  Did you check out the Italian,Greek,Spanish aisle?  They have some fun things in it.  Also I think they have a good selection of good chocolate. And lots of different beer for a smaller market.

I'm laughing at the sad citrus.  I always get berries, apples and organic salads and spinach.

But I have to go there because it's next to my pizzaria! :smitten:

Well, that would certainly have made life much easier.  I don't know why I thought I couldn't take Ditmars back.

Now that you can get there and back faster and parking is a breeze, give it just ONE more try.  It's an odd store in that it is off putting at first and then you discover it has different items than other stores and better prices.  Over time, it became my favorite store but it didn't start out that way.

Buddy, we were hanging out by Ditmars yesterday and stopped off for some pizza at Porto Bello.  Is this the pizza place you're talking about?  I like this place because it has lots of seating and a large menu apart from your basic slice.  The BBQ chicken slice is pretty good and is loaded with chunks of chicken....very filling.  I couldn't finish the entire slice.

A few years back, we'd go to the Chinese buffet place, mostly for family gatherings and such.

Glad you enjoyed D'Espana!

Chuckster, I end up at C-town a lot more than I'd like. What I don't like about it:

The family of birds that have been living atop the aisles since I moved to JH 2.5 years ago.
The 'gross deficiencies' health inspection on the window (I could have told them that!).
The crazy prices. 5.50 for a half gallon of organic milk.
Can't find stuff like fennel, ever, really. Or arugula.

Orzabelle, like I said in my previous post, I don't shop there frequently, so I wasn't aware of all the happenings at the C-Town.  When I have gone, it's usually a quick stop for 1 or 2 items at most and I never noticed any bad odors.  I live one block north of Met Food, so that's closer to me, as is Trade Fair, although I'm not too thrilled with either of these markets myself.  On the plus side, Met has cleaned up its act somewhat.  It used to reek of cat urine and on many occasions, I'd find myself swatting at little moths as I walked down the flour or rice aisles.  Not a huge fan of the Waldbaum's on 77th either.  I prefer the one in College Point...it's cleaner and much more organized.

Chuckster, I love Portobello.  Both to have  a quick slice or to sit down and get a reasonably priced quality meal.  I am also a member of the Matrix gym in the same shopping center (although I don't go as often as I should :().  You can also stop in one of the best supermarkets in the area while you are there - Berry Fresh Farms.

dude dude DUUUUDDDDDEEEE> I've been raving about this pizza and Berry Fresh Farms forever.  And I belong to the Matrix.  Ooooh myyyy gawd.  We must have passed each other.  When I've gone to the gym, I go in the afternoon.  I only go though so I can run upstairs after my work out and get a slice.  I've also eaten meals, both in there and take out.  But I dropped my membership after 5 years cuz I've gotten too busy when I'm working and now with the fur baby, I'm always at some park walking so whatever.

I try to get to Matrix on either Sunday or Monday and Wednesday.  I usually arrive around 5:45 and I am gone by 7:00 (never in St. John's attire).  I also try to go to the gym in the community where I have my weekend home.  Notice that I keep saying "try" :'(.  I was at Matrix today in the late afternoon but I haven't been there in two weeks because of that four letter word "work".  I am a big fan of the gym and the shopping center.  I am also trying to walk either on my lunch hour or if I get home early enough in Astoria Park. I find brisk walking really makes you feels better.  We obviously frequent a number of the same places so I must commend you on your taste .

Earlier today I stopped by the C-Town on 37th Avenue and 86th Street, and like most of my visits there, I found it clean, well stocked and orderly in appearance.  Now, I don't shop frequently at C-Town...most of my visits are pit stops on my way to pick up bagels at M&V, but am I missing something?  Over the years, I've heard a few folks complain about this market and say they prefer shopping at Met or Trade Fair.  What, if anything, is wrong with C-Town?

I'm not usually the biggest fan of C-Town, however I will say that their cashiers are like angels compared to the "service" I just received at Trade Fair.  I bought $3 worth of yogurt, gave the cashier (who was paying attention to anything BUT my transaction) a $10 bill.  I got only $2 back and when I told her that the change was incorrect, I got the biggest song and dance you can imagine from her, plus rudeness from an associate cashier and total indifference from the manager.  The cashier had not looked at me once during the entire transaction (she was busy participating in a conversation that was going on behind my back at another register), and she also had not placed my bill on the top of the cash drawer so that when I questioned the amount of change, there was absolutely no way she could check.

Supposedly they then counted the entire register and said that I was incorrect (which I don't believe), but they also accused ME of walking away during the original transaction, which was so untrue it was almost funny.  So now I'm $5 short.  And mad.

Shelby, I've had a few negative experiences at Trade Fair over the years.  The most recent one involved an occasion whereby an assistant at the register decided to pack one of my grocery items in the bag belonging to the shopper that was ahead of me.  This happened while I was busy gathering money to pay.  Anyway, my receipt clearly showed that I had paid for the item.  Nonetheless, the cashier and manager insisted that it was my problem for not paying better attention.  They refused to refund my money.  Hmmm...maybe it was my fault.  Overall, I don't enjoy shopping at Trade Fair.  The aisles are too narrow, some of the stuff on the shelves are practically near the ceiling, and the employees are not very friendly; at least in my experiences.

Well, in my fit of anger, I told the manager at Trade Fair "I'm never coming back here!" so now I guess I will have to make my threat come true.  Maybe I will give Berry Fresh in Astoria another shot...now that I know how to drive there and back.

Maybe you'll run into me or eddiestjohns!  If we're not in the grocery store, look for us at Porto Bello grabbing a slice.  :)

I really don't like any of the super markets in JH.  Trade Fair is decent but the aisles are too tight.  Met Food is horrible,   the place literally stinks.  I opt for Stop and Shop by 48th Street and Northern.  The best butcher in JH is Don Francisco on 85th street and 37th Ave.  (It's right across C-town)
Don Francisco makes a home made Argentine Condiment (Chimichurri).  Excellent for BBQ on beef, chicken and pork.

Live every day as if it's your last and eventually it will be.  You'll be fully prepared.  George Carlin

What's up with Pacific Market?  I went in to check it out one time, but couldn't get past the front door because of the smell.  Is that normal?  It seemed like it was coming from the butcher counter which is right near the front.

I don't find the smell unusual.  It smells like a fish market.  Or was that not what you were smelling?
