Fantastic.  I'll check it out.

If I find whole vanilla beans and/or rye flour,... I'll treat you to martinis chez nous.   :coolsmiley:

David (and, well, anybody else who considers food shopping a sport/hobby/good bit of fun):

This new chowhound thread about local (Astoria, Sunnyside, JH, and a bit more) food shops might interest you:

Wow.  Total success at the Health Food Store between 83rd & 84th on 37th.  Amazing.  Not only did they have whole vanilla beans and rye flour,.... they stock Muir Glen and Eden Organic tomato products which are very high quality and low in sodium.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for pointing me in this direction.  OMG!

They expanded nearly a year ago. It was much smaller, and didn't carry produce. Good selection of non-dairy items as well. Also the sales staff are very caring, I left a package there once, and they woman remembered I had forgotten it. I went in a few days later and she gave me the items that I had purchased.

Here's a unique little store that I didn't know about:

Pattycakes Cake Decorating Supplies and Candy Making Equipment
34-55 Junction Blvd.
Jackson Heights, NY 11372-3828
Telephone: (718) 651-5770

They have a cake decorating school as well as an extensive online store.

David -  Met Food (75th st./37th ave) also carries Muir Glen tomato products - they are not with the other canned tomatoes, but in the natural/organic section at the end of the baking + plastic wrap aisle. There's also a selection of various flours (Bob's Red Mill), oils, whole wheat pastas, canned soups, jams, etc. most of which are organic.

I wish I had known that last week! I was staring at the tomato section of the met willing muir glen products to appear. I didn't realize they had a separate organic aisle.

Has anyone noticed that the Uruguayan bakery on 37th between 85th and 86th looks closer to opening than it ever has in the past - it seems to have acquired new signage.  I'll have to take a closer look to see if there is any indication when they might open.  For at least a year there has been a sign in Spanish saying something like 'coming soon'.

Finally had a chance to buy a few things at Despana Brand foods  today on Northern between 86th and 87th.  Since today is Saturday they had lots of free samples out - cheeses, olives, sausages.  I bought cheese and olives.  The cheese was great; the olives were not so fantastic (they came in a can) but the can was so attractive I took a photo that I'm attaching.

O.K., so is this bakery an extension of La Nueva Cafe or La Nueva Bakery just up the street?  If so, does anyone know what the plans are for the currently existing location?

FYI, Zagat's 2009 NYC Gourmet Shopping & Entertaining survey is now open for votes.  They historically have very poor coverage of Queens, so there's an opportunity to nominate your favorite shops (e.g. D'Espana, Cannelle, etc.).  If you submit enough reviews, you can get a free copy of the book.

Jackson Heights Health Food on 37th and 83rd is my go-to for healthy food products and produce.  It's been open over a year, but I just found out about it.  All the delicious organic and natural food you could hope for.
