Popular now Compare Foods

I recall new management taking over several months. Also noticed slight changes in products. Went there yesterday, it seems they were cleaning and re-arranging some of the aisles. I also noticed different and more variety. It seems that they're trying to keep up with the trend set by Met and Trade Fair, however, falling short at the moment. Looks like they're planning on a hot foods case and have already seen rotesserie chicken while waiting on line. I wish they would first concentrate on getting fresher produce. They had some fruit and vegtable salads that look pathetic. I think the idea was to make they look attractive, but, blah not when they look like they should be dumped.

Abee,

It's next to Rite-Aid on Northern Blvd and 86th street.

Where do you go to buy boneless chicken breasts?

I was in Met today and didn't get them because they seemed overpriced at almost $5 a pound.  (or is this s normal price?) Ended up with the thighs instead, but just threw them away a few minutes ago because I thought they smelled funny.  This is not the first time I've posted about things smelling funny, so maybe I am oversensitive or paranoid.  Though sometimes it seems prudent to be paranoid about chicken in particular.

Is Trade Fair good with chicken?

funny, (not) but I've thrown food away that was purchase in JH's local grocery stores.  specifically the one on Northern bet. 87/86 Streets.  I am not a fan of the grocery stores in the nabe.

Shelby, Fairway has great deals on boneless chicken breast frequently.  I've purchased them for $1.99 lb.  Yes, it's usually the family pack, but it's so easy to separate into smaller packs before freezing.  I'm pretty sure you've mentioned previously that you shop Fairway, so next time you go there, check the chicken.  It's always fresh.  You can also download their online weekly circular prior to going so you can get a heads up on sale items before making the trip.

Re:  Met Food -- Most of my experiences with meat/chicken have been good.  Bread is a completely different story.  Unless I bring my reading glasses, I can't feel confident that whatever packaged bread I purchase at Met is going to be fresh.  They're pretty bad about stocking outdated bread, so I've started buying bread elsewhere.

Earlier today I stopped by the C-Town on 37th Avenue and 86th Street, and like most of my visits there, I found it clean, well stocked and orderly in appearance.  Now, I don't shop frequently at C-Town...most of my visits are pit stops on my way to pick up bagels at M&V, but am I missing something?  Over the years, I've heard a few folks complain about this market and say they prefer shopping at Met or Trade Fair.  What, if anything, is wrong with C-Town?

I find the produce stinks and has flies all over it... especially in the back.  In addition, I have never bought meat there because it doesn't look decent.  I like the store for quick runs but won't do a regular shopping trip there.

Pacific on 75 street and Bdwy. has nice packaged chicken. It's always fresh, but I don't remember the pricing.

I live on 86th and have never liked C-Town.  Think it's dirty and smelly.  I'd rather go over to Waldbaums in the shopping plaza where Cannelle's is or Pathmark on Northern heading towards Astoria.  But my favorite grocery still is hands down Berry Fresh Farms in the shopping plaza on Ditmars about 46th Street.  They have fresh produce, lots of organic product and my favorite: lots of international products.  They have these cerignola olives from Italy that I can't find anywhere else.  I have to buy jars for half a dozen friends they're so good.  This shopping plaza also has one of my fave mom pop Italian pizzarias/restaurants.  Parking lot above and below ground.

Yes I know some of you don't have cars but plenty of people do and this post is for them.  I'm sorry.   :embarassed:

I just looked at the yelp reviews of Berry Fresh and I am definitely going to check this place out.

What's the best way to drive there?  Do you take the BQE or take the back roads through East Elmhurst to Astoria Blvd?

I like yelp too.

I drive over to Astoria Blvd. via 85th St.  You can cross over the Grand Central at 82nd which turns into Ditmars.  It'll be on your left approx. 43rd to 45th St.  It's easier to park underground where the Matrix gym is.  The top lot is much busier.  You could also jump on the BQE but I find this to be fast and easy.  It's a good little shopping plaza with the grocery store, the pizzaria, petco or petland, a drug store, dry cleaners.... I use all of them.

Chuckster, I end up at C-town a lot more than I'd like. What I don't like about it:

The family of birds that have been living atop the aisles since I moved to JH 2.5 years ago.
The 'gross deficiencies' health inspection on the window (I could have told them that!).
The crazy prices. 5.50 for a half gallon of organic milk.
Can't find stuff like fennel, ever, really. Or arugula.

D'Espana on Northern bet. 87th and 86th.  WOW. What a fun time at the market!  Chuckster you were sooo right.  I walked in today.  It's very very tiny but it was like a party going on.  All these samples of cheese, olives, chorizos, Spanish prosciutto and the offer of WINE.  It was 1:30pm so I was not going to have any but finally after talking to a bunch of people, all of them  drinking, I said give me half a glass.  So the guy says: "okay, I'll give you the TOP half!".  So I had this full glass of wine which forced me to eat more samples.  I loved these people.  I bought some vinegar, olives and cheese.  I'll go back when I need to buy my olive oil.

They don't sell a lot of things but what a cute, fun teeny specialty store.  Highly recommend it for the experience.

I went to Berry Fresh Farms today based on Buddy's directions and it was a breeze to get there.  Unfortunately I forgot to ask the quickest way back and it took me about 5 times as long to get home (lots of traffic lights and even some construction) as it did to get there.  I took Steinway to 31st Ave to get home.

I did have a very pleasant experience in Berry Fresh.  It's well laid out and clean and has good choices in things like yogurt and bulk nuts and cheese.  I bought some decent salmon from the fish counter though found that it wasn't as tasty as the piece I got last from Hong Kong market in Elmhurst.   I wasn't all that impressed with the produce.  To me it looked less fresh than what I usually see at the produce place across from the Met.  The apples and some of the citrus looked kind of sad.

Since it's out of the way and takes some time to get there and back, I probably won't make the trek over there again (unless I can figure out a fast route home).  But it is certainly very pleasant and lovely over on Ditmars Blvd. and it would be great if we had a little shopping center like that one.
