Awnings along 37th Avenue
« on: April 07, 2018, 11:41:38 AM »
Do the awnings along 37th Avenue ever get replaced?  When they are in good shape, they do add character to the neighborhood.  Unfortunately, the state most of them are in now is so sad.  A good cleaning might save some, but there are quite a few that simply need to be replaced.

there are some rough patches, for sure. i actually prefer stretches where the individual awnings differ -- to me, that's old new york -- versus an unbroken stretch of unified awning. but either way, a ratty awning or patch is a detriment, agreed.

Some of the awnings are actually shredded.  I guess this happens due to the weight of the snow and force of the wind. If they are not cleaned regularly, this can happen.  Really looks crappy.

Agreed--I don't like how some of the block-long buildings seem to impose a uniform color to the awnings of all the businesses.  I like the variety of different signs, colors, fonts, awnings.

Yes, but that's largely an individual business owner's prerogative. I think I remember the guy from Swim Two Birds posting about awning requirements for the particular building his restaurant space is in, so perhaps some landlords impose some standards.

I also notice the businesses between 84th & 85th street don't have awnings at all but... just flat signs or vinyl banners (I think).

I vaguely recall reading somewhere (probably on this forum) that each block's awnings were designated a uniform color.  I imagine it's an unwanted expense for the store owners, but nice awnings add to the neighborhood while those in disarray have the opposite effect.
