Target certainly has appeal to immigrants -- as shopping, not an "experience."

Blase Americans use it for the same reason. They buy things there.

But Elmhurst already has a Target.

Why add another one a mile away (okay, 1.3 miles, if you want to split hairs)?

There is now a Target in Tribeca. I suspect we will get one like that.  It is significantly smaller and shares space with Whole Foods, Barnes and Noble and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

The new small Target is quite a distance away from the other one in city terms. I know I rarely make it to either the Elmhurst Target or the Flushing Target because both involve a subway or a bus. The new one will only be a short walk away.

That said, I'm not saying that means I'm definitely going to shop at this new Target once it opens. I have heard not so great things about the other small Targets that have opened in the past two years -- like they are kind of just a glorified drug store -- so who knows how useful it will be.

That's exactly what the mini-Target in Forest Hill is like. It's basically a Duane Reade with a small home goods and clothing section. I checked it out once or twice and was kind of meh about it.

Shelby, you must not really walk at all. Elmhurst Target is about 18 minute walk, and Flushing Target would take about 30. People do it all the time.

It's odd that you would say that I "must not really walk at all." I've walked to the Elmhurst Target multiple times from my apartment. It took me 30 minutes. It's not a walk I enjoy so I don't do it anymore; now if I go I take the 29 bus or if I'm on the subway already I take the R train. I'm surprised you can walk from a location in the historic district to Target in 18 minutes.

I may not be the fastest walker in the world, but when I Google map my address to the Target Elmhurst address, it also tells me the walking time is 30 minutes so I don't think I can be that abnormally slow. 30 minutes to walk to a store like Target is just too much for me, when I find the walk somewhat unpleasant. I would rather take my 30 minutes on the subway and end up in Central Park where I can have a nice and beautiful walk.

I also would really not enjoy the walk to the Flushing Target. I know that without ever having done it. It's not a pleasant route IMO. Also, just fyi, Google maps tells me the walking time from my apartment is 56 minutes to Target Flushing so I guess you and others who make it there in 30 minutes are walking a lot faster than the average person.

“18 minutes”

Kind of like how real estate agents say we’re ten minutes from midtown. Hahahaha.

I walk to the Target in Elmhurst when the weather is decent and I have a need. I try to walk to a lot of places that are only a couple subways stops away because I'm healthy and fit enough to do so and I'd like to keep it that way for as long as possible. It probably takes anywhere between 25-30 minutes.

A tip for making walks in the city more pleasant is to get off the main thoroughfares as much as possible, and finding what's interesting in the neighborhood, which is rarely the commercial area.

My route to Elmhurst Target was not on the main thoroughfare at all; in fact, the route I used to take was mostly through residential neighborhoods in Elmhurst. Like I said, it's a walk I don't enjoy so I no longer do it and instead I take my walks elsewhere. To each his own.

It's not so much the walk there as it is the walk back.  I go to places like Target to purchase things, and lugging those things back can be difficult.  It's not like walking to and from the proposed site on 82nd.

I'm just curious about what type of stores are welcome here.  We seem to be against more pharmacies, more banks, more 99 Cent stores, chain stores, big box stores, cheap clothing stores.   In the article cited in the other post on this proposal, people complain about how Target will put "mom and pop" stores out of business.  But aren't 99 Cent stores and the small pharmacies that have been opening run by mom and pop.  I wouldn't mind having a Target within realistic walking distance.  I shop at the Gap and Banana Republic outlet stores.  I also purchase items from 99 Cent stores.  What is it the community wants?

So shopping at Amazon or Target online is the way to go.
