What would be a successful business?
« on: March 04, 2017, 01:02:15 AM »
Let's say you came into a some extra cash, and want to open up something on 37th Ave. Not food related for obvious reasons. Instead of a pharmacy or a $.99 store, what do you think would be successful? The rents are probably between 5-7k.  I could make it happen, and with the right concept from you, you could be a part of it.  I would love to hear  your ideas. I've lived in the neighborhood for many years, and would like to invest back into it, and also make a living. Maybe even a co-op business? I'm open for ideas, and open to helping others and improving the neighborhood at the same time.

Probably not a successful business, though. Amazon has pretty much eradicated that entire sector, even bigger players.

A co-working space, rec center, art space, and a reception all. Can that turn a profit?

I like the Chik idea, but that involves a kitchen and a larger space

No food guys. Keep in mind the spaces on 37th Ave. or not very large. So rockclimbing wall and gym would be out of the question. Kids  play room also.  Besides I don't think you can make money with the kids playroom

I don't think a yoga place would bring in 2500 a week. Fish store, that's a tough one. If it's not sold, it gets tossed. Plus between the place on 90th, Pacific, food bazar, and the supermarkets. Their is a reason there aren't many around. Also, the spaces are to small for a bar or restaurant. Trader Joe's requires much more space than anything on 37th ave.  Fairway, same thing. A book store would be closed within 6 months. A toy store is interesting, but I don't think you'd get rich from it. And I think it's kind of seasonal. Do kids even play with toys anymore?

A gym would not be out of the question in the Bruson Building.

I've used a one-day pass at Blink at an off-peak hour and it was packed. Planet Fitness at 86th always seems packed to the gills too. JH could probably support several fitness gyms; I even think one at a slightly higher price point with classes and towels would work. It would definitely be a business with a substantial amount of guaranteed traffic.

I also think two food ideas that would be highly successful in tight spaces: authentic Chinese and fresh express sushi.

Two businesses I've long thought would work here:
1) A fair-trade goods store that sells gifts, etc. from around the world--in a place where people come from around the world. I'm thinking of something along the lines of Ten Thousand Villages (http://www.tenthousandvillages.com/).

2) A scaled down co-op grocery that starts small but follows the model of the Park Slope Food Co-op--but starts out filling in missing neighborhood niches (low-cost organic bulk items, great beer, cheeses). Co-op offshoots tend to dream too big at first, trying to replicate the entire place, but I think that would be a mistake here, even as I think something that's thoughtfully done could thrive and eventually have the same reach as the Park Slope.
