I'll reiterate my suggestion of Bocaito, as they have interesting delicious drinks and tasty food (I swear I have to be rolled out of there by the end of dinner) and its not super loud in there. However if you're looking for a reclaimed wood/tin tile joint slinging whiskey and gin drinks like you'd find in LIC/Astoria, you're going to be S.O.L.

I'm into those kinds of drinks/places so I either leave the neighborhood for it or just make myself a kickass Manhattan at home (which I do  ;) )

Chefpaul pretty much hits the nail on the head I think.

Soooo back to the important stuff:

Where do people go for a good cocktail? I'm moving to the neighborhood this summer and am excited to explore.

That's why these cocktail lounges you seek won't really happen here at least until another 10 years from now in my opinion. And there happens to be plenty of places to have brunch just don't expect to go out for avocado toast or eggs Benedict.
But I love eggs benedict. Hahaha. The ones at El Rico Tinto aren't bad. Just a bit small. Definitely still hungry after. Amaru looks more like a night lounge; which tend to have a lower bar for cocktails. See what I did there?

Bocaito does look really good though!

I'm following this, just moved a few months ago, and i hope im wrong.  But unfortunately i think you are moving to the only place in nyc with no brunch and no cocktails within a 20 block radius.  If you want a drink i think you will be taking train to LIC, astoria, or Manhattan

Omg...this makes me incredibly sad. I just posted a separate post about this issue exactly!!
The question is, is it not available bc it doesn't do well, it's not welcome here, it's a niche business in this nabe????

Just read through any of the numerous older threads about wishlists for local businesses. This quadruped is dead and no reason to keep beating it!

Or because nobody wants to have to squeeze another liquor license out of CB3. Just spitballing here.

The Comm Bd. Is the least of the obstacles. Well maybe not the least. But their are many other hurdles to get thru before you are anywhere up to that stage.

I'd love to hear more details. Watching what has happened with Stew and Dudley, it definitely seems more difficult to get a liquor license in JH than in some other neighborhoods.

I'm cross-posting (my own comment) from The Queensboro thread, because this is an appropriate comment here as well:

Here is something that puzzles me. When the heated discussions about gentrification get going--especially in regards to projects like The Queensboro and Swim Two Birds--there are always people who say that JH is a neighborhood of struggling immigrants and cannot support more upscale restaurants for that reason. And we should not expect--or want-- that fact to change. We are a neighborhood that showcases inexpensive cuisines from the many cultures represented here. Get over it--go to Manhattan or Brooklyn or okay, LIC if you want bistros and wine bars and craft cocktails, etc.

Well, we had dinner Saturday night at Uncle Peter's on Northern, where we noticed the top entree price is now something like $46. The place is has been a fixture here for a long time and is busy whenever we've been there. So how can Uncle Peter's survive here if nobody can afford to eat in a place like that? And it's not the only local restaurant that can be quite pricey. So I don't buy that argument that all JH can support based on "what the market wants and can afford" is 99 cent stores and budget-priced restaurants. There are plenty of people here from all over the world who frequent these pricey restaurants and bring their whole family--I've seen large groups eating at places that were far from cheap, where I might hesitate to bring a gaggle of kids along with the grownups for that reason. Thoughts?

I think the issues with the above mentioned Restaurants had little to do with Liquor and more to do with other aspects of opening a place.
