have a veterinarian you'd recommend?
« on: December 03, 2007, 03:42:56 PM »
I'm still searching for a good local veterinarian. Have one you like in the area? I tried the one on 35th between 71 and 72nd (or, at least, I think that's the block) and wasn't really keen on the care there. So, I'm on the hunt for a new one...especially one that's good with, how to put this, handling mean old cats with severe attitude problems.

At the vet on 35th Ave. at 71st, I would only see Dr. Rhiele (not exactly sure of the spelling it's pronounced "really").  If he wasn't the one you saw there, you might want to consider trying him.   Or you can try Dr. Joanne Seinsheimer at the Astoria Veterinary Clinic on Steinway and Astoria Blvd.   It's little further afield, but she is quite sharp (and caring) and it's a very quick trip by car ($10 for car service).  They have Sunday as well as emergency appointments.  Both of these are good local options, depending on the issue, but I also still haul my cats into the city at times when nothing less than our beloved and trusted longtime vet will do.  I've never tried Dr. Tello.

I see Dr. Kamer at the Astoria Vet. group on Steinway. I've used him for the last 18 years.

Thanks. Looks like I'll be off to Astoria with Maynard next time he needs a vet.

I've gone to Dr. Tello with my Cocker Spaniel, and I thought he was really good. They got us in right away and the doc diagnosed the problem and the treatment worked well. I don't recall him being over-priced, but I was used to prices from the Park Slope Animal Clinic which was never cheap. He's at 85th st & 37th ave. which is convenient to my apartment which was another plus. We also went to Dr. Tello for our dog's latest shots and general check up. No complaints there either.

I highly recommend Dr. Tello [both son and father] at Noah's Ark on 37th at around 85th St. Dr. Tello also offers holistic advice for pet care. Their rates were appreciably lower than what I was paying in Brooklyn but why I initially switched vets was for the convenience and it turned out to be a good experience. Also, found a cat sitter through them.
They now charge more for weekend appointments than the cost of a Mon-Fri appointment.

Someone mentioned Animal Hospital on 71st and 35th ave.  I concur...I've had fairly decent experiences with that veterinarian clinic through out my repertoire of owning pets, nearly 30 years of experience.  A situation required the clinic to recommend an alternative since one my cats needed a complicated medical procedure done to save her life.  Other than that, the clinic is thorough and well for most medical care, check-ups, tests, exams and other observations.

I also take my dog to Astoria Vet Group on Steinway but see Dr. Smith.  She's very good and I highly recommend her.

I highly recommend Dr. Tello (the son) as well.  We adopted an older dog from a rescue center with several health issues and he always went above and beyond.  I've never heard anyone complain that he was "overpriced"; his rates were lower than what I was paying in Brooklyn as well.

That's too bad. What kind of dog do you have? And what kind of treatment? Maybe that was why the cost was high?

my BF and i have 2 dogs - one is mine, one is his.

i take my dog to Heights Vet Hospital (35th Ave and 71st St) - have done so for 7 years.  nice enough, easy enough (no appt necessary on saturday mornings), and she is healthy.

my BF didn't like the doctor he got at Height Vet Hospital (don't remember his name but he is the younger, hispanic guy) and took his dog to AAA Vet Care on Northern between 73rd and 74th.  He likes them better and they have taken good care of this health-troubled dog.  my ONE HUGE COMPLAINT is that they upsell EVERYTHING and any time i need to take my BF's dog there in his stead, i have to FIGHT to make sure they don't give him an unnecessary shot or do an unnecessary test...they try to get you for every dollar and i find that repulsive.  martha at the front desk there, though, is the sweetest...my BF's dog LOVES her.  I wouldn't say to not go there, but beware of being sold things your pet doesn't need.

Its a poodle, and the treatment was for diarhea and vomiting - low $450 - high $850
