Outdoor plant recommendations
« on: May 16, 2014, 01:32:47 PM »
Hey all! I'm looking for plant recommendations. They have to be relatively low maintenance (i.e. hard for me to kill), on the small side (for planter roughly the size of a window box), and able to handle intense sun (and occasionally, a fair amount of wind). I was thinking herbs and maybe lavender, but I'd love your suggestions/advice. Thanks!

Thanks @jamesdamian, this is great! Have you grown any of these yourself? Also, if anyone has tips on keeping the soil from blowing everywhere on super windy days like yesterday (pre-monsoon), I'd appreciate them.

I haven't started anything, yet! I have a bromeliad that I finally put on the fire escape, but it looks like the squirrels sampled it. I know a lot of the herbs will be successful if you get starters and transplant. The marigolds are good windbreakers. I think the best advice for the soil in the wind is to reduce exposed area by planting more - but maybe someone out there with window box success can chime in! I can ask some professional gardener friends if they have any tips.

So far the herbs seem to be doing well (except for the lemon verbena--RIP my fragrant friend). I used a bag of pebbles to top off the dirt. So far it seems to be working, I'm hoping it will help hold in some moisture if we get some hot and dry stretches this summer. Thanks again!
