We've taken care of more than 200 trees and, in this month alone, requested
the planting of 53 new trees to be planted on our streets.

NOW IT'S YOUR TURN.

Join JHBG* Saturday 10 a.m. to green the 69th Street Corridor, creating
a new 69th Street Green Zone that will include extensive plantings and a
community composting center.

Meet at the White Castle parking lot at 34th Avenue near 69th Street, where
we will later return to for refreshments.

Neighborhood Chat / FREE WOOD-CHIP MULCH
« on: September 25, 2011, 01:30:10 PM »
Get some while the supply lasts.

We have wood-chip mulch left over after our (JHBG) tree-care effort on 78th Street - seven big bags. They are great for protecting plantings anytime of year and can be used in tree pits, front gardens or back yards- anywhere you want.

The wood chips are on the Playstreet, about 1/3 of a block north of 34th Avenue.
Bring a hand truck or wheelbarrow to haul the wood chips away.

And thank you to all who made yesterday's event such a success. Our next one is October 15.

Neighborhood Chat / Travers Park conditions
« on: March 21, 2011, 06:16:30 PM »
Gauging the level of interest and concern over conditions at Travers Park. Of special concern is the fact that the park will be without a full-time park attendant for the first time in many years. The last time we didn't ahve a full-time park attendant (about a decade ago), it wasn't a pretty picture. (See photos below and more in e-mail just posted on JHFAMILIES yahoo group.)

We are planning a meeting of a re-energized and expanded Friends of Travers Park with Joseph Block the volunteer coordinator and park wizard from the NYC Parks Departmen. We got some names when we made an earlier request about a month ago, but we want more volunteers on board before we bring him here for the meeting.

So let us know if this matters to you and your family - and if you are willing to do something about it. I'm sure most of you are busy, but as they say: "If you want something done, get a busy person to do it."

To respond please contact me at LenManiace@gmail.com and for more information like the Green Agenda for Jackson Heights Facebook page.

Two major events this week, the first of which we are counting on you all to attend:

1. Urgent Community Board meeting on 78th Street Pedestrian Plaza/Play Street. We've resolved the issue over a police permit. We had to ask for a parade permit, but Monday police said we could walk without one.

Meet up @ 78 St. & 34 Ave. @ 7 p.m. We will walk together to the Louis Armstrong School. Please bring kids and signs (no sticks attached to signs, per police). We need to pack the meeting w 300 people. If you live in the 80s or west of 93 St. Street you can meet us on 34 Ave. We will be walking along the northern side of street.

The walk will be fun, think of it as a JH version of the Italian after-dinner stroll, la passeggiata.

ALSO. We can use your help to keep this parade on course and safe. We will be walking on the sidewalk, along 34 Ave. To help, please contact me at LenManiace@gmail.com.

2. Release of The Green Agenda Report at Travers Park on Saturday 11 a.m. More than two years in the making, with more than 15 community outreach sessions that involved more than 400 people. We will have summary brochure versions for distribution, with the full report available online. The GA4JH is important, but attendence is less crucial.

For any questions and/or/ to help, LenManiace@gmail.com. Thank you.

Community Groups, Activities & Events / BUSY SPRING FOR TRAVERS PARK
« on: April 13, 2008, 10:23:16 PM »
A lot is going on at Travers Park and the various volunteer Friends teams.

Alexis Andrews and Alfonzo Quiroz have been doing great work on Family Fun Day (May 17 and Summer Sundays in the Park (our performance series in June and August, which will feature our first Grammy nominee performer).

Dudley Stewart is heading our park clean and green team, and also doing translation work on our Summer Sundays poster. Renee Stonebraker will be updating the beautiful poster that she designed for us).

Javier Ramirez-Baron (our community organizer from Queens Commutniy House) is becoming a familiar face in the park. He's been doing park surveys and working to develop park volunteers from our immigrant communities.

Mary Abbate, Donovan Finn, Todd Goldman, Helen Ho, Byron Muñoz, Will Sweeney, Zlati Rothman, Ed Westley and Len Maniace are working on a  grant proposal for a Green Agenda for Jackson Heights that could help make Jackson Height a greener more environmentally sustainable community - deadline April 23.

If we do get this grant, the Green Agenda will be developed out of a series of community meetings this fall. Stay tuned.
