Community Trade and Classifieds / English Oak Pub Table for Sale --- $750
« on: November 07, 2012, 09:36:01 AM »
This antique tiger oak pub table was probably made in England in the '20s. The rich tone and contrasting grain will complement a variety of decors. The top is 30" high, and expands from 27"x42" to 27"x64" using two recessed leaves that extend from both sides. The carved barley twist legs balance the table top without adding bulk. The side also houses a small drawer and the apron is accented with oak roping. The table comes with a tempered glass top and four matching chairs with leather covered seats. The set is in good condition and with a only minor chip on the top.

Please contact me with any questions.

Thanks for looking.

Pets and Animals / Dangerous garden mulch - fact or myth
« on: April 25, 2010, 11:29:38 AM »
This was forwarded to me recently, and there is debate over its validity.  Some urban legend sites are valdiating it, while others deny it.  I'm forwarding it so that pet owners and gardners are aware of the possibility. ~ TBM

Recently, the owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large  helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's web site, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa  Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it."

*Snopes site gives the following  information: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp *

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. IT IS LETHAL TO DOGS AND CATS. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's  chocolate which is toxic to  dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, axanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach  contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Neighborhood Chat / MillionTreesNYC Tree giveaway
« on: April 15, 2009, 08:24:45 PM »
MillionTreesNYC is having their next tree giveaway on Saturday, April 25th at the Queens Botanical Garden, from noon till 4PM.  Any remaining trees (very unlikely) will be available on Sunday at the same time. There is a limit of 2 trees per person/household and proof of NYC residency is required.  There is no information as to what trees they may have, but there were many varieties last year including dogwoods, snowgoose cherry, magnolias, ginko and honey locust.  You'll need to sign a paper to adopt and care for the tree.  This is a great opportunity to plant a tree in your garden or on block in any vacant tree pit at absolutely no cost.

The Griswold took full advantage of the program last year and all the trees are doing very well.

Just one of the trees from last year..

Pets and Animals / "Hurricane Hanna" - Calico kitten up for adoption
« on: September 16, 2008, 11:16:01 PM »
We rescued an 8-week old female calico kitten on Sept. 4th.  A fellow Griswold resident noticed her hobbling on the street after dark and contacted us for help.  We were able to get her into a pet crate after 30 minutes.  Another fellow resident donated $150 for her medical needs.  She is a very sweet kitten and seems to crave human contact.  We are doing everything possible to find her a good home (since we are already at max. capacity and cannot take in another animal).

We want to find her a family or individual that loves cats, preferably in an apartment where she can't escape again.  If you are serious about giving a wonderful kitten a home, then please click on this link to see images of this wonderful cat, and contact us via the email link on our website.
