Neighborhood Chat / Re: Finally, a Community Center!!!
« on: June 06, 2021, 04:41:39 PM »
A community center would be amazing. Everything you listed below, including classes, exercise space, a lecture hall/events space, community events for a wide range of ages and interests, after-school programming, etc. I share your pool dream too! That would be just amazing.

Shekar Krishnan has made this one of his priorities. It's something I'd definitely support enthusiastically!

How many of your pointless rants about 34th Ave do we need?

Neighborhood Chat / A New Special ACA Open Enrollment Period Starts Now
« on: February 07, 2021, 09:30:38 PM »
The Biden administration has decided to re-open Affordable Care Act (ACA) enrollment for a special open enrollment period beyond the typical 6-week end-of-year ACA open enrollment period, to help Americans get health insurance and fight the pandemic.

The new special open enrollment period will allow anyone who would like to enroll in an ACA plan (i.e. no documented proof of a qualifying life event needed) to do so, for a 3-month period, in most states. It’s also expected that those who currently have an ACA plan will be able to switch plans during the special enrollment period, if they would like.

The deadline for NY is March 31. More info here: https://nystateofhealth.ny.gov/

Neighborhood Chat / Contacting Jessica Ramos
« on: January 13, 2021, 11:40:26 AM »
Has anyone ever had success contacting Jessica Ramos's office? I've written to her office twice about important matters, asking specific questions, and didn't even get an acknowledgement, even when I followed up. I really do not appreciate the lack of responsiveness of local representatives.

This is one of the many things I really value about Danny Dromm -- his staff responds to constituents.

I understood that there is commitment to explore ways to make the arrangement permanent. That said, Danny's newsletter, like the latest DOT survey, emphasize that the details are being worked out, and that's where the community will have opportunity to offer feedback. Hence, the meeting in December, the survey, an upcoming meeting after the survey has closed, and other opportunities, mentioned in the DOT message. So, no, I don't agree it was a sham, and I do think these are valid opportunities to provide feedback.

Real Estate & Home Improvement / Re: Seeking wood tabletop refinisher
« on: December 29, 2020, 12:14:27 PM »
Hi Suzaan,

The quote does strike me as being on the high end but not outrageously so. I had a 24x24 mid-century coffee table refinished (veneer repair, stains) a couple of years ago, and I paid around 220-250 or so. Unfortunately, I no longer have the number of the person I used but they had a little carpentry studio in Williamsburg. Don't know if googling that would help. Good luck.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Jackson Heights Charities
« on: December 22, 2020, 11:30:36 PM »
The Jackson Heights Beautification Group -- they do a lot of good work for the neighborhood.

There are also a bunch of LGTBQ non-profits that support the local community, from youth to senior citizens.

Beyond that, there is the Queens Library, whose services extend far beyond book lending; the Queens Museum of Arts, the NY Hall of Science, and Flushing Meadows Park. All of them do tons of good work for the community.

Thanks for donating!

Real Estate & Home Improvement / Re: Washington Plaza--what is it like?

The neighborhood is phenomenal! The buildings vary -- some are very well run, and people are friendly; others aren't. I live in a small coop that's part of a larger complex, and there's a fantastic sense of community.
Good luck.

Neighborhood Chat / Buying local this holiday season
« on: December 12, 2020, 01:12:13 PM »
Like many here, I prefer to patronize local businesses. This year it's particularly important to me to support my community. Below are some places where I'm getting my presents this year, and I'd like to expand my list with suggestions from all of you. Where in the neighborhood are you doing your holiday shopping?

* Open Borders Books -- https://www.instagram.com/openbordersbooks/
* Lockwood
* Apna and Subzi Mandi -- for a basket of Indian goodies for an out-of-state friend
* This local artist on etsy -- https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/LindaDrawsQueens?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=760948554
* Table Wine

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Christmas Trees
« on: December 08, 2020, 04:39:51 PM »
We got ours from the guys at Ultima but I have to say, they were very pricey this year. We paid $70 for a 6" tree. It's lovely and I've been buying from them for years but I think next year I'll look for less expensive options.

While I agree with the premise, and I strongly believe that taxation is the price of civilization, I oppose the idea that residents having to close all budgetary gaps from their pockets. Why not find a different source of revenue, say, a corporate one? Amazon fared much better in this pandemic than residents in our neighborhood, for ex. I also note that residents are already paying a surcharge for restaurants, increase costs, receive significant reduction in services, etc.
