Neighborhood Chat / A New Special ACA Open Enrollment Period Starts Now
« on: February 07, 2021, 09:30:38 PM »
The Biden administration has decided to re-open Affordable Care Act (ACA) enrollment for a special open enrollment period beyond the typical 6-week end-of-year ACA open enrollment period, to help Americans get health insurance and fight the pandemic.

The new special open enrollment period will allow anyone who would like to enroll in an ACA plan (i.e. no documented proof of a qualifying life event needed) to do so, for a 3-month period, in most states. It’s also expected that those who currently have an ACA plan will be able to switch plans during the special enrollment period, if they would like.

The deadline for NY is March 31. More info here: https://nystateofhealth.ny.gov/

Neighborhood Chat / Contacting Jessica Ramos
« on: January 13, 2021, 11:40:26 AM »
Has anyone ever had success contacting Jessica Ramos's office? I've written to her office twice about important matters, asking specific questions, and didn't even get an acknowledgement, even when I followed up. I really do not appreciate the lack of responsiveness of local representatives.

This is one of the many things I really value about Danny Dromm -- his staff responds to constituents.

Neighborhood Chat / Buying local this holiday season
« on: December 12, 2020, 01:12:13 PM »
Like many here, I prefer to patronize local businesses. This year it's particularly important to me to support my community. Below are some places where I'm getting my presents this year, and I'd like to expand my list with suggestions from all of you. Where in the neighborhood are you doing your holiday shopping?

* Open Borders Books -- https://www.instagram.com/openbordersbooks/
* Lockwood
* Apna and Subzi Mandi -- for a basket of Indian goodies for an out-of-state friend
* This local artist on etsy -- https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/LindaDrawsQueens?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=760948554
* Table Wine

A brand new floor lamp; tripod with black legs and white shade. The shade is a really lovely fabric and the lamp works fine. Just doesn't fit in my space.

Asking $140 or best reasonable offer. Currently, the same lamp on sale for $190 at Wayfair.

Details here: shorturl.at/oAU14

Thanks for looking!

Neighborhood Chat / Green Mountain Electric Supply
« on: September 27, 2020, 03:58:31 PM »
Does anyone have feedback on Green Mountain Electric Supply? They supply green energy and ConEd customers can choose them as a supplier through ConEd. They've long had a presence in the neighborhood and I wonder if anyone can talk about their experiences. Thanks!

Neighborhood Chat / NY June Primary - Ballot Info?
« on: June 13, 2020, 01:04:58 PM »
Can someone direct me to a reliable resource where I can learn more about the candidates on the ballot for the June 23 Dem Primary election? I'm specifically looking for info on the positions and candidates for members of the state committee, district leaders, and delegates to the Judicial convention. Thanks in advance!

I receive daily requests for donations -- from Elmhurst Hospital, from other hospitals in the city, from schools, from local businesses, etc. -- and I understand how dire their predicament is. That said, it is not a predicament that can be solved with small donations. We need a large-scale government action, e.g., a chunk of the relief package.

What will our community get from the $2.2T relief package? Does anyone know concretely? Thanks.

I'd love to hear what buildings in the neighborhood are doing, things both small and big.

Thank you in advance.

Neighborhood Chat / Spectrum sucks
« on: December 11, 2019, 05:58:24 PM »
There’s an outage — again. Been going on for over 2 hours. They’re supposedly working on it but this is so annoying and happens so often—this company is one of the crappiest service providers in the world.

For those who have Verizon Fios, can you share how you got them? I’m called and written but they say it’s not available in my area (77th street). I know for a fact there are buildings on 76th that have FIOS.

Thanks!

Neighborhood Chat / Venue ideas?
« on: October 25, 2019, 04:14:24 PM »
Hello everyone, hoping to tap the collective wisdom. I'm looking to hold a small gathering, about 15-20 people, and I'm looking for ideas for a venue. I am not interested in a private event, but rather a cool, low-key but elegant place that can accommodate a crowd of this size. I would consider Manhattan, Queens (JH, LIC), Brooklyn -- anything that is accessible by subway.

Thank you in advance.

Neighborhood Chat / Spectrum Sevice Issues
« on: October 22, 2019, 09:02:36 PM »
Just a note to anyone who uses Spectrum internet - as per the Spectrum technican I spoke with last week, Spectrum has reduced the power for the internet signal that goes to the cable modem. As a result our internet service slowed down a bit.

Also, heads up that we called for support and Spectrum charged us $50 for the visit!
