Neighborhood Chat / Re: Superfresh on Northern Boulevard is closing
« on: December 06, 2021, 08:40:25 PM »
This is the Superfresh in the 70s.  There is another Superfresh over behind the new Target and Chipotle on 82nd Street.  I don't believe there is a Superfresh on Northern around 88th.

Ah, oops. I was thinking of what I now realize is a Key Food, at around 87th. It is actually a pretty nice market so I think I thought it was a Superfresh.

Is this the newer Superfresh in the 70s, or the one that (I think?) has been there a while, around 88th St?

Or am I wrong that there are two Superfresh stores on Northern?

I love the kale mango salad from El Rico Tinto. And lots of good options from Just Made 4 U.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Pediatrician Recommendations

!!! So exciting !!! My husband and I are very happy with and wholeheartedly recommend Manhattan Queens Pediatrics at 70-53 Broadway. http://www.manhattanqueenspediatrics.com/

We've also been very happy with this practice, both the doctors and the staff. A real old fashioned neighborhood practice where you can always get a same day visit or a quick callback.

Best of luck! Be sure to join the jhfamilies listserv if you haven't already.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Infant Day Care Options
« on: July 25, 2021, 07:35:33 PM »
I'm 6 months pregnant and the maternity policy at my work is pretty generous, but I will eventually need to go back to work. For those of us who don't have relatives or whose spouses both will need to go back to work, how do you do it? I'm a bit loss at my options and, I feel like I'm already failing as a parent, as when I talk to my co-workers it seems they had daycare lined up from the get-go...

You do not need daycare lined up from the get go! Some places have spots open at the last minute, and in others you really just need to line it up a few months before you need it. You can search for Group Family Daycares at the link below. Most take babies as young as 6 weeks. They are small, so many are full, but just call around. https://ocfs.ny.gov/programs/childcare/looking/ccfs-search.php

You can also search for commercial daycares here.

For recommendations, joining jhfamilies is a great tip. And you can also ask people with babies and young kids that you see on the street... this is a friendly neighborhood!

Just know that you are NOT behind or failing in any way. Good luck!

P.s. feel free to post any follow up questions

Restaurants & Food / Best outdoor dining in the neighborhood?
« on: June 05, 2021, 11:17:25 PM »
Now that the weather is warm and many people are vaccinated, I'd love to hear people's recommendations for the best outdoor dining setups in the neighborhood or nearby. I'm interested in places that are actually outdoors, either sidewalk seating or a roof but no walls/open sides.

I really enjoyed the setup at the Queensboro, for example. I've heard Bistro Eloise recommended on here but have not checked it out yet. And Espresso 77 is great. Curious to hear where else might be worth checking out as we transition away from only takeout.  Thanks!

I haven't tried it but I also noticed this place-- very nice storefront. I believe it is Hector Escobar Studio.

The first two that come to mind...

Together We Can funds a lot of good local efforts (food pantries, social services, etc). https://togetherwecanrc.org/

Make the Road NY is based here but of course has wider impact. https://maketheroadny.org/

Beyond Jackson Heights and in NYC at large, there are of course so many it depends what causes or efforts you are most interested in (e.g. food insecurity, homelessness, education, etc.).

I noticed they now offer ice cream, classic flavors as well as boozy and vegan options. I'm glad they're branching out, and JH could use some new ice cream options. Has anyone tried it?

A GoFundMe has been set up. Nearly 100 families lost their homes. Please help if you are able.  https://www.gofundme.com/f/89staid

You can verify on the tenant association instagram that the link is genuine

Neighborhood Chat / Re: Mid-year tips for steady newspaper delivery?
« on: April 06, 2021, 05:12:29 PM »
This doesn't address the original question, but I am interested to hear of others with newspaper delivery problems. I had to cancel my NYT weekend delivery because more often than not I did not get it. It was left in the unlocked vestibule, but still I was surprised people would just take someone else's paper so routinely.
