Restaurants & Food / Best outdoor dining in the neighborhood?
« on: June 05, 2021, 11:17:25 PM »
Now that the weather is warm and many people are vaccinated, I'd love to hear people's recommendations for the best outdoor dining setups in the neighborhood or nearby. I'm interested in places that are actually outdoors, either sidewalk seating or a roof but no walls/open sides.

I really enjoyed the setup at the Queensboro, for example. I've heard Bistro Eloise recommended on here but have not checked it out yet. And Espresso 77 is great. Curious to hear where else might be worth checking out as we transition away from only takeout.  Thanks!

Neighborhood Chat / Construction adjacent to Northern Playground?
« on: March 31, 2021, 07:10:33 PM »
Does anyone know what is going on in the large, under-construction lot just south of Northern Playground? This is between 93rd and 94th and 34th and Northern.

This may well be extremely old news-- I don't normally walk down that block but happened to do so today and wondered what was going on. A new building? An expansion of the playground/park? It is a big lot that is totally dug up and full of construction equipment, so I was curious!

Neighborhood Chat / Outdoor ATM in Jackson Heights area?
« on: January 18, 2021, 09:54:06 PM »
Hi, can anyone point me to an outdoor ATM in the neighborhood? Either the kind you sometimes see installed on the outside of a store, or the drive through kind?

Trying to avoid going into small poorly ventilated spaces right now, whenever possible. Thanks!

Restaurants & Food / Bombay Kitchen / Rahjbog -- closed?
« on: September 19, 2020, 08:52:06 PM »
Did Bombay Kitchen (formerly Rahjbog Sweets, which I loved) close? I haven't walked by in a while, so this may be old news, but when I was by there today it looked like it is now a halal grill. Does anyone know the story there?

Neighborhood Chat / Sirens in the 80s?
« on: September 11, 2020, 09:20:24 PM »
There have been almost incessant sirens going on in the 80s for 10 minutes or so. Anyone have any idea what is going on? I was wondering if there was a big fire or something else.

Update: This Twitter account of unknown origin (not sure if it's reliable) says there is a fire on 84th Street:

Hope everyone is okay.

Restaurants & Food / Thai Cook in Elmhurst -- NYT Critic's Pick
« on: January 07, 2020, 05:03:06 PM »
Thai Cook
81-17 Broadway, Elmhurst

Pete Wells gives a pretty rave review to this tiny new Thai restaurant in Elmhurst, called Thai Cook (it shares a space with the Chinese hot pot restaurant iCook).

It does not seem to be on Yelp yet, though Eat the World beat the NYT to the scene by about three months.

Has anyone been? We have no shortage of good Thai food nearby, but this place looks great.

According to the New York Post, CitiBike is planning a major expansion:

Maps obtained by The Post show that in the next three years, the bicycle-share program is going to double its geographic reach by placing docks in the Bronx and farther out into Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

By the end of 2023, new bike-share stations will pepper Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Sugar Hill, Washington Heights and Inwood in Manhattan; Mott Haven, Melrose, Port Morris, Highbridge, Claremont, Morrisania, Longwood, Concourse and Mount Eden in the Bronx; Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Crown Heights, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, East Flatbush, Sunset Park, South Slope, Windsor Terrace, Prospect Park South and Kensington in Brooklyn; and Sunnyside, Maspeth, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Corona in Queens.

The program, owned by Lyft, is forking over $100 million for the expansion. It will also add bikes to the existing coverage area, bringing the total size of the fleet to 40,000.

Neighborhood Chat / Violent mugging on 72nd street
« on: March 01, 2019, 03:42:30 PM »
Cops are looking for suspects who violently attacked and robbed a man at the Elmhurst/Woodside border last month.

According to police, at around 11:45 p.m. on Feb. 13, a 22-year-old man was walking on 72nd Street towards Roosevelt Avenue when three men pulled up beside him in a white Jeep. The crooks chased the victim into a nearby parking lot, hit him with a blunt object and demanded his property.

The suspects took the victim’s wallet, cellphone, keys, money and jacket before fleeing the scene.

This apparently happened earlier today around 65th & Roosevelt. The driver was not injured, but still a scary incident.

Noticed this place just the other day. Not sure if it is open yet (it was closed when I was walking by), but it seems to be relatively new. Has anyone been?

They have juices, smoothies, acai bowls, panini, oblea, ice cream, etc.

(Partial?) menu is on Seamless:

Restaurants & Food / La Esquisita - El Rico Tinto on Hampton St
« on: October 05, 2018, 05:44:44 PM »
[Split by moderators from El Rico Tinto Is Gone thread]

El Rico Tinto just posted this on their Instagram account:

To all our customers!!
We would like to invite you to visit us at our new location:
La Esquisita
40-08 Hampton Street
Elmhurst, NY 11373

https://www.instagram.com/p/BokJpyXg0X2/?taken-by=elricotinto

I'm a little confused! There seems to be an existing bakery called La Exquisita at that location, since late 2017. The pictures on Google (https://tinyurl.com/ycyrajac) don't look much like what El Rico Tinto was doing. But maybe they are taking it over? Or becoming involved somehow?

I'll wait to learn more, but I hope this means that maybe the future is bright for El Rico Tinto. I already miss that place so much.

Restaurants & Food / A JH arepa cart is a Vendy Award finalist
« on: September 20, 2018, 05:34:57 PM »
Luis Alfonso Marin Valencia, who owns and operates La Saboroso de Aracataca [at 80th & Roosevelt], emigrated from Columbia 35 years ago as a dancer and artist. His popular arepa cart pays homage to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, with yellow butterflies painted on, and a Marquez quote “I feel Latin American from any country, but without renouncing the nostalgia for my land: Aracataca.” The arepas are made of cheese, corn flour, sugar and milk, fried on a griddle until browned, and then topped with another kind of cheese.

Any fans of La Saboroso de Aracataca on this board? I've never tried it, but now I'm curious... especially as I wait for the new Arepa Lady restaurant to open.
