Neighborhood Chat / Re: The Last Word!

As that thread reads you were troll baiting my previous post by asking me what Gladys says.
The response was she can’t be bothered. And then a cut and paste from urban dictionary as to your names meaning.

Please quote accurately and within context.

God bless

Happy New Year, Beech Court.

Starting in AGAIN?

I didn’t disrespect you.
YOU named yourself or didn’t you know what they name means?

Nope.

Ok, I admit it's hilarious that I chose the name.

Maybe for some having the last word is important.
Maybe that means they think they are right or have won.

It's none of that at all...

But there is a word I'd like to contribute as the forum shuts down and we move into a new year...

RESPECT

You can't get it if you don't give it.
Everyone needs it, especially if we expect to get anywhere.

BLESSINGS to all in the New Year!

Interesting you should mention "respect".

You, who wrote this.

ABCDEFGHIJK
An insult used in chatrooms and on Facebook.
A- amazing
B- beautiful
C- classy
D- darling
E- energetic
F- fantastic
G- great
H- hot
I- I'm
J- just
K- kidding

Perhaps "respect" is your memo to yourself...for the future.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: "Violence Plagued Jackson Heights"
« on: December 29, 2021, 11:06:55 AM »
I think ‘Violence Plagued’ is hyperbolic.
But when I am out and about, there is a palpable undercurrent of tension, and controlled chaos.
We love Tacos Morelos on 37th Ave, but we always eat inside, away from the street.
In the past I would read these crime stories about JH, and say to myself ‘why are they in that area at 3:30am.  Or why were they hanging around Roosevelt Ave at 2:45am’.
I felt like the crime was separate and removed from my immediate (historic district) -now the crime is happening during ‘normal’ hours and it seems to be happening everywhere.

I seem to recall the first year I moved here someone was murdered on the doorstep of their apartment block in the Historic District.
And when I got here,  I was immediately warned that around 90th Street was gang territory and dangerous.

I am not convinced that anything has really changed.

Yes.

Positive and negative are relative.

And an online environment makes this obvious. (It's a philosophical discussion. Does absolute truth exist? Probably not. According to Godel, not even in Math.)

People online definitely don't communicate as they do in real life.

From Grindr to this forum, the style of communication online is specific to the environment online.

People's character traits, like wanting to correct others, for instance, ...which may be a control issue...do come through of course.

But an online environment is certainly a parallel world to reality.

Does it have similarities to online gaming...but with words? Maybe.

I get a lot of "real news" - the local kind, the neighborhood news here. And it seems that Shehkar prefers tweeting which is something a lot of us managed to avoid. Maybe a tweet interpreter would run interference and post on another site so that we could keep informed without the treaded tw...
Opinions are great too if, and only if, they are substantiated and not just pablum spoken again and again in the same tone with the same language. A good debate sharpens the mind and clears the brain. I have heard talk of reinvesting in local newspapers and of someone starting a new one in Brooklyn. Maybe we will have a similar good fortune here in Queens? With hyper local news segments and posting for those not device driven. Dare to dream.

My observation is that online... contrary opinions are called pablum by certain posters. These posters should look in the mirror. Their own opinions are equally pablum.

Their monotonous negative pablum is being met by similar toned, but contrary and apposite positive pablum.

One recurring lesson from the online world...often folks can dish it out...but they sure can't take it.

This is the first and only forum I have ever been a part of.

And as such, I reiterate, that this forum has taught me so much about the inner online thought processes of people, opinions, anger, kindness, group-speak and human flaws.

Thank you again to the moderators for this incredible learning curve on online protocol and behavior.

I leave the forum far wiser and much more knowledgeable about the online world than when I started.

And I take that into the future.

Much appreciated!

is there a single neighborhood chat board anywhere in North America that's focused on real news?

No.

But thinking that opinions on a forum board are actual news is a delusion for those in a bubble.

That's the real problem.

Yeah. We have so many bored tweens here in JH. Some on this board and they'll like it. Meanwhile Heather Cox Richardson on Substack is a thought provoking read. Nice to be outside the traditional machinery of news and commentary which is something I appreciated from this soon to be gone site.

My observation of this forum is that it's far more opinions on topics rather than any real news.

Which is fine.

But individuals' opinions being confused with actual news... is not so great.

Yep, Discord is totally for the tween demographic.

Tik Tok may be the next suggestion..?

change for the sake of change is always good. who questions any change to anything is automatically suspect. to that end, we should probably hold national elections monthly. don't dismiss the idea out of hand due to curmudgeonly tendencies.

I think this issue may be generational...

Yes, but visual literacy and video capabilities of folks is increasing exponentially. These have become sophisticated and often ironic and smart.

It's the future...and it's exciting...

Change is inevitable. And I look forward to it.

Meanwhile....

I'M AGAINST IT
Groucho Marx (One of Groucho’s most famous comic songs is this one from the 1932 comedy film Horse Feathers.)

I don't know what they have to say
It makes no difference anyway
Whatever it is, I'm against it
No matter what it is or who commenced it
I'm against it

Your proposition may be good
But let's have one thing understood:
Whatever it is, I'm against it
And even when you've changed it or condensed it
I'm against it

I'm opposed to it
On general principles, I'm opposed to it

etc.

My guess is that in the future we will send video clips of ourselves speaking our comments. Like a combination between YouTube and a forum like this.

That will decrease misunderstandings....and will allow folks to immediately gauge...the rational or irrational state of the poster. Also less hiding behind being anonymous. Sure there'll be filters and voice changers and AI voices and avatars  but it'll make being anonymous more difficult.

Looking forward to that.

I do agree that this style of a forum has reached its use-by date. It was great.  But there will be more visual video ways to interact...and that'll be exciting. Here's to the future!

It would be a beautiful Christmas present to have all parties involved recognize the plusses and the problematic regarding the 34th Ave Open Streets project.  :)

The Open Street of 34th Ave is a fantastic Christmas present to the people of Jackson Heights.

Thank you, Santa...and whoever else is involved in the fabulous project.

It's a most wonderful Christmas gift during these pandemic times to be out in the open where it's safe...and not stuck indoors where it's less safe.
