Neighborhood Chat / Re: 78Th St between Northern and Travers Park
« on: March 27, 2019, 08:38:48 PM »
Well, itsit, I guess I won’t see you there. But in a parkless place like here, every inch matters. And in this case, we’re also talking about safety for kids playing. It seems terribly misplaced that yet another car dealership in northern could win over the interest of an entire community. Especially when that dealership is brand new to the area and was renovated long after the plans for the park had been announced. Why didn’t the dealership owner think of that in his design? Why would the interest of one business get priority over the interests of thousands of neighbors? I hope you ponder and join us.

It is is upsetting and very worrisome that gangsters are feeling free enough to settle their disputes in broad daylight in a crowded train.

The suspect was 26 and had 12 prior arrests. The "victim" was 20 and had already been arrested seven times (he also seems to be have been the one pulling the gun in the first place). At least I get some comfort knowing that one went to hell and the other went to prison.

Even though it's cold as the north pole and it's just a part of the renovation, it's wonderful news. I want to thank everyone who worked for it. From Danny Dromm, to the folks at the Green Alliance and JHBG and the hundreds of people who had to rally to get 78th st closed for good. It's the best thing that happened to this neighborhood in a very long time.

Some of you will remember this... https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2010/05/24/jackson-heights-neighbors-band-together-to-win-car-free-street-expansion/

Sad to see that half of the park looks almost done, but that construction has been essentially stopped for more than a month. Seems like they are waiting for better weather for the lawn? Is it going to be real grass? I looked up and the park won't be finished till September! Gosh, why does it take so long?

Are you saying you think that no personally owned cars should be allowed to park on the streets?

Nope. I meant that free parking is not a right and that it's not the city's responsibility to offer free parking spots. Personally, I don't mind that people park their cars on streets. But if the city tries to get that space back for public use, that's what I would prefer to see, and that's what I think is a better use of that space. For example, they could do things like turning parking spots into parks... or protected running/walking/bike lanes... or car/bike share programs... Heck, those are all better uses than serving as parking for a few.

In an ideal world, whoever owns a car should pay for their parking spot. My bicycle, my car, my stroller, my fridge, my sofa, all of these are my problems. If I want to have them, I should find a place to keep them.

The street is public space and should be used for the good of all.

One single car that John Doe parks on the street only benefits John Doe. It does not benefit me, who also pay taxes. A carshare program could benefit John Doe, me and everyone else.

John Doe wants to have his own car, sounds good to me, as long as he pays for his own parking spot. I don't use Citibike. I have my own bike and I park inside my apartment.

Good luck fitting your car in your apartment, John Doe. But the point is: the car is yours, it's your problem where you park it. Just like it is my problem where I park my bike.

With you, Jeff. It's ridiculous that they did not put a single elevator and that they think this is ok.

Neighborhood Chat / litter near 74th / Roosevelt subway station
« on: April 25, 2018, 06:13:56 PM »
Anyone knows what could be done reduce littering in 73, 74th street area, by the express station? It's a lot dirtier than the 7 stop on 82nd street. A lot.

With Diversity Plaza being finished eventually, a feature that could be nice will be gross if litter remains as it is now.  I would love to start a 311 enforcement call campaign.

Anyone has other ideas?

According to the city:
"Residential property owners must clean the sidewalks adjoining their property and 18 inches from the curb into the street. Sanitation agents can only issue violations for dirty sidewalks in front of residential property from 8 AM to 9 AM and from 6 PM to 7 PM, 7 days a week. Enforcement times may differ for properties used for both commercial and residential purposes.

Commercial property owners must clean the sidewalks adjoining their property and 18 inches from the curb into the street. Enforcement times are limited to two 1-hour periods per day and vary according to which sanitation section the address is located in.

Business owners can also request a commercial enforcement routing sticker, which lists the times during which the Department of Sanitation can issue tickets for dirty sidewalks and gutters."

It's very easy to imagine what that space could be used for. For example, an extra playground (have you noticed how packed existing playgrounds get on weekend afternoons?), or more green space, or a senior gym, or a two story recreation center, with a garden at the top... I think it's worth looking into what it would take.

We do have a couple of strong groups, JHBG and JHGA. You could reach out to them and propose. If you are willing to do much of the legwork (like spending time emailing and meeting with politicians and other groups), there's a good chance one of these groups would support you (like telling you who to meet, going with you, sparing you time on on routes they may have tried in the past).

Just put a call over here if you want to lead the effort, a few more people might want to help with legwork. What these groups probably can not do is to run the idea for you. They are all volunteer-based and they already do what they do (JHBG does a lot of the public gardening and JHGA is responsible for the play street).

But they have many of the connections that you'd need and some experience in doing this (remember, the play street and Rory Staunton field were not there until very recently).
