Jackson Heights Shopping Center - is that where Cannelle is?

Yes.  Funny, how Cannelle has taken over as an identifier for that area.   ::)

Assembly Member DenDekker's next shredding and e-waste event is this Saturday, January 9th. His newsletter doesn't give the time or place, but he usually conducts it at the Jackson Heights Shopping Center in East Elmhurst. I imagine the hours are 9-1.

Yes!  Thanks, Shelby2 and Jeanette for sharing the info on this coming Saturday's event.  BTW, the information for the event states:

Saturday, January 9, 2016
Jackson Heights Shopping Center
Shredding from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Electronic-waste recycling from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

I wonder how one can go about raising money for a park in a neighborhood that that's not as wealthy. Even here, the little Travers Park. I wonder if there could be a way for the coops (corporations after all) to tip in for its upkeep.

I guess my questions are: do you think that a coordination of the co-ops in this area could be a good way to raise money for Travers upkeep? Either thru annual drives or, say, a $2 monthly fee added to your building's maintenance that would be redirected to the park? Do you think that's even nevessary?

I like the idea of possibly organizing annual fund-raising drives, but rather than focusing on the co-ops, how about directing such initiative to the entire community as well?  Proposing a commitment to an increase in monthly fees, however small, may be challenging when approaching the corporations.  That said, an annual event whereby neighborhood residents are involved on an independent level may be more effective... A neighborhood "co-op," of sorts, to benefit Travers.

I'm sorry, I really can't remember.  I think I took my stack of papers, they weighed it, and then stuffed in it a bin, which might have had a lock on it.  So I suppose that probably means that they have a third party shredding it.  It seemed more expensive than I anticipated, so the next time I just tried to time my shredding needs the Danny Dromm's free shredding.

I think the UPS store on 83rd near Roosevelt also offers a shredding service.

Pretty sure it is a third party.  The Staples on Northern and Broadway offers it too.

Thanks for the replies, Shelby2 and homeowner.  I think I'll wait for the shredding truck to stop by the neighborhood.

Neighborhood Chat / Re: A planet fitness for Jackson Heights??
« on: December 18, 2015, 01:16:53 PM »
Resurrecting this thread to add information relating to a new development on the Planet Fitness front.  According to a recent blog entry from the Jackson Heights Post, Planet Fitness has filed for permits with the Department of Buildings to bring the gym to Jackson Heights, specifically Roosevelt Avenue, between 86th and 87th Streets.  The article states that Community Board 3 was scheduled to address this matter yesterday, December 17th.  Anyone have any more news on this?

Anyone know if there is a copy/print/fax/ship business in JH that does a paper shredding service? There was one in my old neighborhood (Shippers Express in Downtown Brooklyn) but I haven't found one here yet.

Staples has a shredding service.  I used the one in Woodside, but there is a Staples in Jackson Heights as well.  It's located on Roosevelt Ave somewhere around 90th St.

Shelby2, how does the shredding service work at Staples?  Does one do their own shredding, or is it drop-off service where a third-party company does the work?  I called earlier this week, but was unable to get a clear answer about the process.  They did mention that Staples charges $1.25 per lb.

Anyone know if there are any shredding events scheduled in the coming weeks?  My small shredder is just not cutting it (pun intended  ;)).

Also the small produce stores usually offer better quality and prices than the supermarkets - all else apart they aren't locked into weekly pricing. Picked up nice blueberries at Lemon Tree this week for $1. The thrill of the chase!

Absolutely!  I'll add that the smaller produce stores have more turnover, thereby the ability to offer those fresher veggies / fruit.  Where were the $1.00 blueberries the week of Thanksgiving when I needed them for a cheesecake topping?  A pint was going for $4.99!   ::)

Neighborhood Chat / Retail Stores, and The Much Needed Mom & Pops

Here's a link to an article from New York Magazine about small, independently owned businesses, and how they manage to survive amidst the onslaught of rising commercial rents in the city.  According to the article, while many people do shop at big box retailers, the mom and pops continue to fill a niche for shoppers locally.  The article references Jackson Heights' Frank's Pharmacy, and how the move to its current location, post-fire, has positively impacted its business.  The take-away is that the small shop owner is in a position to provide better service on a personal level, something most folks can appreciate.

toddg, thanks for creating this thread.  It serves as a reminder that we have La Flor nearby, a wonderful spot offering very nice brunch options.  It's been a while since my last visit also, so looking forward to re-exploring their dinner menu.  Here's a link to La Flor's website.

Actually, Sam puts a slight twist on some of his dishes-they are  original plates even in the realm 'coffee shop genre'

Absolutely!  I'm glad you pointed that out, Songodd.  Sam is pretty creative, and that's reflected in his dishes, in addition to his flair for holiday decor.

I think Juju's should be on the list.  Also, if you're including Elmhurst at all, I love Ayada Thai.  If you're not including Elmhurst, then another favorite Thai place is Kitchen 79, which someone has already mentioned above.

My favorite cafes are Espresso 77 and Addictive Coffee (aka Addictive Wine and Tapas).

I agree with Shelby2 in that Juju's is a good choice to include.  While the cafe's proprietor, Sam, serves-up the usual coffee shop fare, eggs, bagels and the like, he does so quite well.  Also, what's cool about Juju's is that his customer base reflects some of the diversity that Jackson Heights is known for.  On any given day, you'll hear varied languages being spoken and see an equally varied group of age ranges represented.

Restaurants & Food / Re: Chipotle coming to JH - 87th & Northern
« on: December 11, 2015, 11:03:25 AM »
Someone posted earlier that the restaurant is scheduled to open for business today.

I drove by today; they were not open for business.

According to the link posted above from the Jackson Heights Post, a spokesperson from the restaurant provided the scheduled opening date.  Speculating here, but maybe the delay involves precautionary steps Chipotle needs to take prior to opening to ensure food safety?  This may be something that Chipotles nationwide need to do.
