Neighborhood Chat / Retail Stores, and The Much Needed Mom & Pops
« on: December 18, 2015, 12:04:29 PM »
Here's a link to an article from New York Magazine about small, independently owned businesses, and how they manage to survive amidst the onslaught of rising commercial rents in the city.  According to the article, while many people do shop at big box retailers, the mom and pops continue to fill a niche for shoppers locally.  The article references Jackson Heights' Frank's Pharmacy, and how the move to its current location, post-fire, has positively impacted its business.  The take-away is that the small shop owner is in a position to provide better service on a personal level, something most folks can appreciate.

New York Yankees fan here rooting for the home team 'Amazins' to get their mojo on as they take on the Kansas City Royals tonight at Citi Field.  The Royals are up by 2 games, but to quote Yogi Berra, "It ain't over till it's over."  Let's go Mets!

On that note...  WNYC stops by a few local eateries to chat about What to Eat in Queens for the World Series.

Neighborhood Chat / Forest Hills Barnes & Noble closing
« on: August 26, 2015, 08:33:59 PM »
The Barnes & Noble on Austin Street in Forest Hills has not renewed its lease, so it will be closing soon.  This news saddens me, but what I find surprising is that a new Target will be replacing it.  Seriously, is there a need for another Target when there's one not too far off on Queens Blvd.?  I guess Target is not really the issue here, but rather the demise of a bookstore.  By the way, the article mentions that the one located in Bayside is also due to close.

Neighborhood Chat / Jackson Heights - Boundaries
« on: August 21, 2015, 12:36:44 PM »
I came across this DNAinfo interactive map [see below link] where users can draw lines identifying a neighborhood's boundaries.  The finished drawings represent what each individual perceives as his / her neighborhood.  I found this interesting, considering that Jackson Heights proper is frequently misrepresented in news media.  The neighboring communities of East Elmhurst, Elmhurst and Corona tend to mistakenly fall into "Jackson Heights" territory.  Upon completing my drawing, I noticed that my boundary lines were way off of what others consider Jackson Heights.  The question is, who's right?

Neighborhood Chat / Local swimming pools
« on: August 13, 2015, 06:22:34 PM »
I'm doing some research for a friend who's looking for a local swimming pool that offers either day passes or memberships.  She's aware of the Long Island City YMCA and Flushing Meadows Corona Park Pool, but is still interested in other possible options.  If I recall correctly, one of the hotels located near LaGuardia offered day passes for non-guests.  Does anyone have more information on this?  Also, I've heard about a pool at the Bulova Corporate Center in East Elmhurst.  Googling didn't come up with much.

There's been recent mention in another thread about a Banana Republic shop opening on 82nd Street.  DNAinfo confirms that it will be an outlet store with a projected opening date in early November.

I received the following flyer and petition while at the 78th Street Playstreet earlier today.  The organizers for Puppy Play at Travers Park will be at the Playstreet tomorrow, Sunday, June 14th, from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm collecting signatures in support of obtaining a permit for a dog run at Travers Park.  I was informed that the flyer erroneously states 12:00 pm as the finish time for the collection of signatures.  They will be there until 4:00 pm to answer any questions on this initiative.

A message from The New York Immigration Coalition:

This Friday marks the one month anniversary since the Nepal government formally requested that the United States designate their country for Temporary Protected Status, yet the Department of Homeland Security has still not given an answer. Please join us for a Thunderclap that will send tweets and Facebook posts urging DHS Secretary Johnson to support Nepal on Friday at 12pm! Please take a minute now to show your support and help promote the Thunderclap to your networks.

It has been six weeks since the first in a series of violent earthquakes and aftershocks destroyed much of the infrastructure in that country and left thousands homeless. TPS will help the thousands of Nepalis in the United States on temporary non-work authorized visas or who are undocumented obtain work permits – so they can work and help rebuild Nepal - and travel authorization so that they can go home and check on loved ones.

New to Thunderclap?: Thunderclap sends out the same message over the Twitter/Facebook/Tumblr accounts of everyone who signs up for the campaign. But first we need to get 100 folks to sign up (you sign up with each social media platform individually, so you can have it go over twitter but not Facebook, e.g.). If we meet our goal, on Friday at noon our message (copied below) will go out over – hopefully – hundreds of Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr feeds to then be retweeted, shared, etc. (and will all link back to the statement going up on our website). Thunderclap won’t post anything else on your behalf unless you sign up for another campaign giving them permission to do so.

Below is the message to be sent out:

Restaurants & Food / New Greek restaurant on 37th Ave.?
« on: March 30, 2015, 11:55:44 AM »
I've heard from two different sources that the bagel shop owner on 37th Ave. (80s) is considering converting the shop into a Greek restaurant with outdoor seating.  According to what I was told, permits for the conversion are pending.  Does anyone have more information on this?  It would be great for the community, as the only local option for Greek food is Plaka in East Elmhurst.  I'm hoping it's true!

Neighborhood Chat / Prima Donna store closing
« on: January 30, 2015, 12:28:01 PM »
It looks like we'll be having another empty storefront on 37th Avenue.  There's a "For Rent" sign at the Prima Donna store located on the corner of 80th street (pretty sure it's 80th).  This doesn't surprise me, as the store had been advertising liquidation sales for quite a while now.  It's a pretty large space, so it'll be interesting to see what comes next.  Of course, some kind of eatery would be awesome, but that would require a complete kitchen installation... a large investment by any interested party.
